Trade skills can be valuable when enlisting in the military. Depending on the specific skills you possess, you may be eligible for certain military occupational specialties (MOS) or positions that require technical expertise. The military often seeks individuals with skills in fields like mechanics, electronics, engineering, construction, healthcare, and more. Your trade skills could allow you to enter the military at a higher rank or receive specialized training in areas that align with your skills and experience. This can be beneficial for career advancement and job satisfaction within the military. To explore your options further, it's advisable to speak with a recruiter from the specific branch of the military you are interested in to determine how your trade skills can best be utilized and whether you qualify for any enlistment incentives or programs.

Keyston’s Answer

Enlisting and learning a trade is an excellent idea, that holds a lackluster impression. Don't let that descourage you because tradesmen are vital assets in this world. An example of that is myself. With the trade skills I've honed in facility maintenence, I could bring valuable expertise to the military, like keeping equipment in top shape. My advice is, this path might involve seeking roles aligned with your personal skills, which could offer stability and advancement. Enlisting could offer discipline, training and a chance to serve your country. Those are all benefits that will shape a solid foundation for your future career and personal growth.

Eric’s Answer

Hello Dominic,

The short answer is that your skills, whatever you may have, will be of little to no consequence. The military is a closed labor system, meaning, that whatever branch you decide to service in will take responsibility for your training and education needed to perform your job, and job is based off your aptitude, which is determined by your Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test (ASVAB) line scores. Ultimately, if your current skill set translates to a line score section on the ASVAB, your aptitude will most likely place you in that same sector of industry your skill set is in.

Hope that helps.
