Hi Catalina! Great question. There are certain career paths that require specific degrees, but a lot of them don't! I am someone who graduated and never worked in my degree field. So, if you know you want to do something that requires specific skills, I would focus on those. But if you aren't one of those people, then I would recommend finding something that interests you! In high school, you have to take classes in all subjects but in college, you really get to focus on specific areas, which is awesome. I was a Public Relations major and now I work in business operations for an education company. Even though my degree wasn't relevant, I still learned great soft skills to help me excel in my career.

Hi Catalina,

This is a great question. Do you have any ideas on your long-term professional goals? For example, if you desire to become a doctor, a bachelor's degree in a science field would be best. If you don't obtain a degree in the field of science, you may have to take extra courses after your bachelor's degree to obtain the science pre-requisites to pursue a medical degree.

However, if you're uncertain about future professional plans at the moment, you could explore a business degree or a degree in a subject that interests you. If you'd like to become a lawyer for example, having a degree in social science such as political science, psychology, sociology, history or even philosophy is not uncommon for those entering law school.

I started as a business major but took some history classes to fulfill general education requirements at my college and found that I was passionate about history and really enjoyed the classes. As a result of this, I achieved excellent grades in my classes. Although I now work in financial services, the skills I learned as a history major such as analyzing primary source documents from historical periods to write my papers has lent itself well to my current work as I've developed the skillset to evaluate and analyze as part of the work I do today.

Many organizations, even in business, are okay with a bachelor's degree in any subject as it shows your commitment to education and completion of your degree. There are some jobs in business that do require specialize degrees such as finance or accounting to obtain a role in that field.

Thank you for your question. Many students have similar question. Firstly, you better find out what career you have interest first in order to determine you major and minors.
Below are my suggestions :
1. Think about your hobbies, favorite subjects, etc. and identify the related subjects
E.g. If you like music, would you want to be a singer, musical, musical actor, music producer, music composer, etc.
If you have interest in maths, would you like to be an accountant, banker, engineer, financial analyst, maths teacher, etc.
2. Find out more on these career and determine what you have interest
3. Speak to someone who are working in these careers, Seek guidance from your mentor, school career counsellor, your parents, etc.
4. Shortlist 1-2 careers you have interest to pursue
5. Explore the entry criteria of relevant subjects in the college

The way I decided my major was to take an inventory of my interests and find a degree program that matched. I work off of feelings and passion and not so much logic and planning, so I wanted a career I was REALLY passionate about, regardless of whether it would make me money or be easy to find a job.
I started out with a History degree from a large state college then realized that what I wanted all along was a Museum Studies Degree. I switched colleges my Junior year and finished up with a different degree. Changing majors is more common now, so don't worry bout having it figured out right away.

There are a lot of goals to consider when choosing a major such as,...
-Do I want a stable career for a long time
-Am I more interested in a stable income or doing work I'm passionate about
-Is there going to be career development opportunities once I graduate or am I stuck in the same position forever
-Are there jobs I like in my area or will I have to move?

What a great question. Here are some things to think about:

Ask yourself, what makes your heart race with excitement? What topic never fails to pique your interest, making you want to dive deeper? Consider the things that you're naturally good at. Could you imagine expanding on those skills and growing even more in that area? These are the questions I thought about when it was time for me to pick my college major.
