What are the chances of being hired as a Customer Service Rep for a fintech?

I applied a week ago yesterday, and got rejection email on Monday of this week. They're looking for BA/BS "or something similar". Even though they rejected me, they did invite me "to apply again later.". I'm currently on SSI since October 1995 and an ex felonx2 that's been "on the straight and narrow" since my release 28 years ago (7/14/95). My conviction state has passed a law that now prohibits me from even attempting to apply for a pardon due to new legislation. I have successfully completed parole in June 2001, never been in trouble since. I don't drink, party, used illegal drugs and as of today, 15 days smoke free. In short, I want to make my life better, be a taxpayer again, and go from there.

Jonathan,

This would take a bit of research, but, have you considered moving to a more "liberal" state - one that limits companies from delving into the criminal history of its applicants. Unfortunately, the invitation to apply again is just a formality on a letter.

You should be proud of your accomplishments since your release. Sadly, you will continue running into such obstacles - especially when it comes to dealing with personal information of clients on a computer. There are some options though.

As was previously mentioned, skilled trades is a good possibility. I've known many people similarly situated who found a job in skilled trades. Another alternative is starting your own business. Yard work, snow removal, window washing, pet care, etc. There are many people who cannot do what they want to do for various reasons - people whose vision won't allow them to be pilots, for example. Have you checked with your state's workforce office for assistance? They may have a program to help you gain training for a career.

The fact that you found this site shows that you are looking, and trying, to do better. I hope we are able to offer some worthy advice.

Thank you comment icon My utility company just hired a felon for the field work. I just got done resubmitting my poor resume, etc. Their next event is next year. I'm not sure if I'm not going to be homeless or not bc my landlord wants to remodel my apartment. Jonathan D
Thank you comment icon Kim, you're right. I had the feeling that the invitation was just a formality. (SIGH) Jonathan D
Thank you comment icon Jonathan, you have to be persistent, but also take time to look after your mental health. that means taking a "me" day occasionally! You may also need to look at your resume. Do something to get some current experience, perhaps volunteering with helping to build homes with Habitat for Humanity or something similar. Education or experience over 10-15 years old is hard to sell, for anyone. Volunteer experience can be included on a resume. Kim Igleheart

It seems like you've completed high school but haven't ventured into college yet, right? If so, I'd suggest considering an associate degree from a community college or state university. It's a great way to expand your opportunities!

Alternatively, you might want to think about attending a vocational school. This could lead to becoming a skilled professional in fields like plumbing, electrical work, carpentry, welding, or computer repair. It's a fantastic way to learn practical skills and become a master of your trade.

Have you considered the solar panel industry? Depending on your location, there could be numerous opportunities for you to get involved in solar panel installation.

If you're interested in becoming a customer service representative, you'll need to have a solid grasp of the English language, both in written and spoken form. This is especially important depending on the specific role. Keep in mind, though, many companies are now using AI to automate their customer service, so human interaction isn't always necessary.

So, take some time to think about the suggestions above. They could be your ticket to a rewarding career beyond being a Customer Service Rep.

Here's wishing you all the success you can imagine!

Thank you comment icon I was in college in 1989, until I ran out of transportation money bc of my family. I do have 1440 hours of Business Data Processing that I was taking while in prison in the 1990s. Thank you for the info. Jonathan D
