Hi Yeika,

This is definitely a mindset thing. In high school, especially for me, college was the end and be all. But if you start thinking of college as just another step in your life or career then it isn't that much different from high school. Wherever you end up applying or going to college, as long as you make the most of where you end up - your college experience is what you make of it. As long as you begin to accept that, the nerves will definitely calm down. Good luck!

Sincerely,

Paul

Sam’s Answer

Hello Yeika,

Don't worry about it. Seriously. As long as you meet the university's admission requirements and the university has an open spot, you will be accepted. You should apply to at least three (more is better) universities that you think you will like, then just wait for the replies. One of the universities will have an open spot and accept you.

Hey Yeika,

That's a great question! I was in your shoes just a couple of years ago. Many people share the anxiousness regarding applying to and being accepted into a college. Here's what I'd recommend to help:

First, apply to schools of varying acceptance difficulty. Many people apply to a "safety school" or two. a safety school is essentially a school that you are confident that you will be accepted into based on their academic requirements (GPA, SAT/ACT scores, etc.). This helps many people by giving them the reassurance that they are able to get accepted into college. Next, apply to schools that you personally would love to go to. These schools should be where you can truly see yourself going. It helps to go on tours of various colleges to learn and see more about what life is like there. If you visit a university's website, you should be able to get some information regarding these tours along with other helpful information. Every college is the same, yet very different in its own unique way. Also, once you are attending a university, it is always possible to transfer to another. I hope this helps! Best of luck to you!

Matthew’s Answer

Yeika,

Thanks for posting this question; it's a good thing for every rising college freshman to consider! Yes, applying for colleges can be nerve-wracking, primarily because you're stepping into an unknown season of life. This is something you've never done before, and you're not quite sure how it'll work out for you. That makes total sense, and believe me, it's completely normal. Here's what I'd suggest in terms of coping with the uncertainty involved with applying to colleges:

Matthew recommends the following next steps:

Remember to keep breathing. Without question, it requires a lot of faith to keep walking in places you've never seen. I'm speaking figuratively and literally here. However, as long as you keep breathing, you'll be more prepared than you think for the next season :)
Remember the good things you've done so far. As you look ahead, it's good to keep in mind the wonderful memories you've made, the ways you've grown and the things you've done to get where you are now. Keep those things close to your heart and mind; they will always be a special treasure!
Remember the good things ahead. Picture yourself on a college campus as a new season of life unfolds. Think about the thrill of discovering a little more of who you are and the ways you can grow and pursue your passions in life. College is a wonderful time to experience life in a very new way, and you've got what it takes to enjoy those moments!
