What skills are educators must acquire?

My major is Education but I am a little confused about what kind of skills I must acquire. #higher-education

Thank you comment icon #1 is positive student-teacher relationships. Usually you get into this later on (possibly in the certificate program). if you want experience (which I would recommend), volunteer in a classroom. Because what you learn in a lecture and applying that in a classroom and be very different. Zena

Elizabeth’s Answer

Hi! IN addition to academic skills, depending on the grade level you are hoping to teach, you will want to gain a lot of interpersonal skills as well. For example, if you are interested in pre-K or elementary school, you will want to embrace creativity, patience, and empathy. As you move into higher grades, you will want to ensure students stay motivated to learn, creativity (but now for older students) and time management. First, I think that Elizabeth's answer is great, specially in people skills. As a school teacher, you are working with your students, working with other teachers, your principal, and your student's parents. Right out of college, you may work with teachers who are your parent's ages and students who are very young. So you have multiple stakeholders who each have their own needs. Sometimes what the students want isn't what you or the principal want. You will need to anticipate and set the right expectations. I refer to this as pretreating a situation.

When you go to a teacher's college, you will need classes in how student learn, teaching subjects like math, reading, writing, and science. You will also need a class or two in lesson planning, which is also known as instructional design. I would also suggest learning technology, blended learning, and blended classroom work as well. See if there is a critical thinking class and one on creative teaching methods as well.

Hope this helps. All the very best luck!
