How can I guarantee that my passion for social work will help find the right homes for those in need?

I’m a sociology majoring who’s concentrating is focusing on social work because I want to be a social worker. I want to help children and families find the right job and make sure they have a safe place to stay. How is my passion going to guarantee them a home? I want to fight for them, be their voices! But sometimes I feel like I’m a little weak because of other’s opinions of me. How can my passion help them if I’m weak? I want to give these families my ALL as their social worker... I don’t want to let them down.

Hi Nads - I love that you are so passionate about caring for others- we need more people in the world like you! My biggest piece of advice would be to look at the mission statement of the agencies you are looking to work for to make sure that they align to your personal values and what you want to be a part of helping to accomplish. In this case, I would search for nonprofits that help to relieve homelessness in your area to possibly intern at, so that you can get a good idea of what this work looks like practically.

Alisha’s Answer

There are no guarantees in social work. People aren’t predictable and every outcome isn’t what you want it to be no matter how hard you work and how genuinely you care about people. You learn to do the best that you know how and be ok with it. You won’t be able to save the world but you’ll be able to make a difference in the lives of the people you work with. You’ll laugh and you’ll cry a lot but it’s rewarding.
