Should I move to California to pursue my acting dream?

I would love to move from the East Coast to California to pursue acting, but I'm not sure if I'm willing to risk moving so far away for such a competitive field. Is it worth it to pursue my dreams or should I stick with going into science? #acting #science

Hi Laura,

Making a move like that is scary and risky. That said, nothing is as rewarding as making your living doing something you love. The decision is really one that only you can make. Do you have contacts out there? A place to stay? A school you'd like to apply to? Do you have the savings to last you a few months if you don't find a job right away? All of these questions play into it.

There are certainly things you can research first that could help your decision. Are there any companies out there that you'd like to work with? Maybe you can get in contact with them before moving. I'd also encourage looking carefully into the opportunities in your area, or some place nearby. It might surprise you how many opportunities are around. I'm not sure where on the East Coast you are, but if it's near Boston you can find a lot of stage and/or film acting opportunities in that area.

I'd like to emphasize again that it is a decision no one can really make for you. Just do your research. If you're going to throw your whole self into the unknown to pursue your dream make sure you have a bit of an idea about how to do that.

Best of luck whatever you decide!

Ryan’s Answer

Hi Laura,

Absolutely do it. If it's really your dream then give it a shot for a year or two and see what happens. Life's too short to have any "what if?" regrets.

Best case, you make it. Worst case, you experience something new, meet new people, pick up new skills, and then on to the next thing.

Good luck!
