How will a background in Logistics future my future careers?

In the fall, I will start my career in the Marines in Logistics. I chose this job because I am really good with supply and organization. I am also good with hands-on types of work. I know there are many jobs out there, but I would like to use this as a skill to fall upon if I ever leave the Corps. I also wonder hat types of majors I should pursue if I would like to stand out among other candidates. #college-major #military #logistics-management

Jeff’s Answer

If you really are interested in supply chain (the newer term for logistics), then you should major in Supply Chain management There are many good colleges that offer this program and some colleges offer this major as an online program. I met a Col. from the army who went to MIT and worked with their supply chain masters students as a rotational assignment. However, outside of the marines, there really isn't a lot of "hands on" work when it comes to supply chain. It's more desk work and travel to various locations around world (for some).

Thank you comment icon Julio, congratulations on your position in the Corps. I am attaching a link to an article ranking the top schools in Supply Chain/Logistics Management. I believe your experience in the Corps will offer you an advantage over other candidates. If you can take advantage of education programs offered and get a degree in Supply Chain and Logistics you will be well positioned as you will have both the education and applicable experience out of the gate. You may be better served by focusing on Global Logistics as that is where the future lays. http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/rankings/business-supply-chain-management-logistics Arthur Ponce

Hi,
Congratulations on your Marine career and thanks in advance for your service! :)
As a former Logistics guy in the Army (I know, not a marine but still military!) :) I had a hard time finding civilian employment in the logistics field when I left the Army but back then (in the 90s) things were not as computerized. I would say to take some business classes in supply chain management, mangement, business administration, etc. if you can while in the Marines and this will help make your transition easier.

Above is a link to supply chain careers, it is a much larger career field now than it was in the 90s. My daughter has her Bachelors degree in this field and has had a great career with defense contractors for the past few years.

Also, check into professional associations in supply chain (http://www.ism.ws/) and join if you can afford it, they offers training, job boards and a lot of good information.

Good luck!

Thank you comment icon Hey Gary, thanks! Your advice has been very useful, and I will take what you said into consideration. Julio

As a former Marine myself I would say that there is no exact path to take if you want to pursue a career in logistics after your term. I would recommend becoming a subject matter expert wherever you get stationed and learn as much as you can about the process. The experience you will gain in your 4+ years could make a great impact on where you apply in the civilian world. In college, you can major directly into Supply Chain Management which should incorporate logistics as a course of study. This combined with your military experience and networking will make you stand out above the rest of your peers.
