Is there a specific path, or steps that someone must follow to become a creative writer?

Hi! I am a high school senior who loves history and who never stops writing. I used to strongly want to be a writer, but through the years I was slowly discouraged. However, I reevaluated the career today and it still interest me. Are they any steps or is there a certain path I have to follow to become a writer? #creative #writer #fiction #writers #novel-writer

La educación de un escritor puede implicar cursos de pregrado en las áreas de: el periodismo, la literatura, la filosofía o cualquier otro título de grado en el área literaria que desea escribir (en mi caso yo trabajo como un escritor educativo, Soy graduado en Pedagogía) .


Hay algunos pasos prácticos para iniciar la carrera de escritor:




  1. Definir el tema / área de conocimiento que desea escribir;




  2. Organizar una rutina y un espacio tranquilo para trabajar sus textos;




  3. La investigación en fuentes confiables sobre el tema que se desarrollará;




  4. Búsqueda de sitios o de organizaciones de la zona que se quiere desarrollar su trabajo;




  5. Promover y publicar su trabajo en los blogs, web, linkedin, sitio web de la institución en la que estudia, los tablones de anuncios de la Escuela.




  6. Lleve a cabo el trabajo voluntario. Hay muchas instituciones que necesitan escritores y editores para escribir en revistas, noticias, blogs, periódicos informativos.

Hello Jazzmin, great question.


You are already on the right path to pursuing your passion of writing. Your creative writing skills will serve you well throughout your career. There are many different occupations that'll allow you to pursue this passion.


I'd recommend majoring in Journalism, English or Advertising. All three will set you up for many different careers that involve creative writing. I'd also recommend using different mediums to showcase your writing skills like LinkedIn's publishing platform or websites like http://www.mcsweeneys.net/


Being a great writer will serve you well in your career. It's a skill I use everyday in my career as a Copywriter. I get to write ads for different brands. It's not a profession that you would traditionally learn in college, but I love going to work everyday.

Hey Jazzmin!

I'll give you my personal experience. I've written about a half dozen books of my own, publishing 4 of them. I know a good deal of writers, some who were published through big presses, small presses, and some who were self published. Almost all of them started with a separate job first and then pivoted into writing. Many still have their day jobs, though some are full time.

If college interests you, I'd find a degree that provides you with career options. Personally, I majored in English and specialized in creative and professional writing. I ultimately got a job as a technical writer, but never stopped writing my books.

But getting a degree in creative writing isn't necessary to be a talented author. College isn't necessary at all. I would recommend you find a job to pay the bills and then write consistently, with a goal in mind. Don't pick up projects and then drop them when they get boring. Practice seeing projects through. Get good at pushing through the hard parts. Set aside a specific amount of time and write every day. Find communities, in person or online. Poll your community on reader pet-peeves, red flags, and unpopular tropes. You're allowed to use them, but you have to do them well and intentionally.

If your ultimate goal is to land a large press, you'll need to query agents, but only do that once you have a strong manuscript. If you want to go for a smaller press, you can probably reach out directly or go the agent route. If you want to self publish, find those communities. Depending on your genres of choice, there are different tricks to getting books in hands.
