James’s Answer

Zitlali,

Radiologists are often called the "doctor's doctor". We participate in the care of patients referred from our fellow physicians. These may be family doctors, pediatricians, ob-gyn doctors, internal medicine specialists, all the surgical specialists and emergency room physicians. In our work ,we

interpret examinations performed using X-rays, ultrasound, CT, MRI and nuclear medicine. In addition, we perform procedures on patients such as biopsies, opening blocked blood vessels, draining collections in the body.

These radiologists are called diagnostic/interventional radiologists. In addition, there are other

radiologists called radiation oncologists who use radioactive sources to treat cancer patients.

We are all medical doctors who have graduated from medical school and then receive four-five years additional training in our speciality. We are assisted in our work by a team of radiologic technologists who have received three- four years post high school education.

Our contribution to each patient is to discover the cause of their illness, the extent of their injury and provide a means to follow the response to treatment.

James recommends the following next steps:

Your friend may find it helpful to visit a hospital radiology department or out-patient radiology office in their community.

Rachel’s Answer

Radiology is an integral aspect to the treatment of cancer. At our cancer center, all patients who are diagnosed with cancer then undergo radiologic imaging to stage their cancer. This means that the x-rays show how far the cancer has spread. The stage of the cancer is the most important factor in determining the course of treatment.
