Leonard, it's important to know that learning Spanish from YouTube isn't as straightforward as it might seem. You need to think carefully about whether it's the right tool for you. Yes, YouTube has lots of language learning resources like tutorials and lessons. This can be great for people who want to learn at their own pace. But, you need to be careful about the quality of these resources. Not all YouTube videos teaching Spanish are good. Some might not be clear or accurate, which can make learning harder. Make sure you choose channels that have good teachers, structured lessons, and interactive exercises.

Also, Leonard, remember that YouTube has its limits as a language learning tool. It can be a good extra resource, but it might not give you everything you need to learn a language. You might not get the detailed lessons, personal feedback, or structured learning you'd get from a proper language course. To really learn Spanish, you'll need to use other resources and practice opportunities. You might need to join language exchange programs, sign up for online courses, or find conversation partners.

Plus, Leonard, think about how you like to learn and what your goals are. Some people do well learning on their own with YouTube, but others might do better with more structure and guidance. You need to think about what works best for you. Keep a positive attitude, set realistic goals, and stay motivated. These are key to making the most of YouTube for language learning.

In short, Leonard, you can learn Spanish from YouTube, but you need to think carefully about whether it's the right tool for you. Check the quality of the content, understand its limits, and make sure it fits with how you like to learn. If you do all this, you can use YouTube effectively to improve your Spanish and have a rewarding learning experience.

It's a great idea to get some immersive listening through Youtube. I follow the travel vlogger "Luisito Comunica" regularly. He speaks with excellent diction and a really good pace that's not fast at all.

Other than that, you need some more interactive learning with immediate feedback. This is where I'd suggest Busuu for their Spanish (they have both European Spanish and Latin American Spanish courses). They have a feature where you can post sentence in Spanish and have native/fluent Spanish speakers respond to you (and vice versa for anyone on the platform learning English).

Gina’s Answer

Hello Leonard!

My name is Gina Roca and I'm a graduate student at the University of Florida. I was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and am fully bilingual in Spanish and English. I completely understand your concern and have some options for how you can learn Spanish successfully! Here are some recommendations:

1. When it comes to learning Spanish you can use YouTube to learn more and also save some money since it is a free platform to view countless videos on the topic. My recommendation is to stay dedicated to learning and finding a channel on YouTube that accommodates your level of proficiency and that guides you in the best way possible so you can start learning the language better.

2. Not only can you use YouTube to practice the language but you can also look for movies or TV shows that you may know already in English and find the Spanish versions so that you can hear the words in Spanish that replace the ones that are in English. Additionally, you can also watch shows or movies in Spanish on YouTube and change the subtitles to English so you can compare the words in the captions with what you hear with what you are watching. You can do this with any video since it doesn't have to be necessarily a show or a movie.

3. As someone who natively speaks Spanish, my best recommendation for learning Spanish is to speak with someone who knows the language. As a personal example, when I was learning English I often pushed myself to speak it in settings where someone spoke the language, spoke it with friends, or continued to practice it at home with my family. This is one of the most effective exercises I used in my learning experience since it helped me with the pronunciation and cohesiveness of all the words.

4. Not only can you use YouTube but other social media outlets may provide similar videos or have a more personal approach that can help you understand the language better. There's no wrong way how to learn it as long as you are dedicated and push yourself to continue learning even if you don't understand certain things. Reaching out to others to practice or checking if your school offers any learning opportunities for Spanish will be beneficial to your journey.

5. Lastly, using language learning apps like Duolingo is a great way to get to know more about the language and practice in a fun way. If you go to Duolingo's YouTube page some videos can help you answer some questions about Spanish and learn Spanish alongside YouTube and Duolingo which is another great way to practice. There are endless options on how to learn but is all up to how fast you want to learn, what you know already, and what makes you feel comfortable during this process.

Hope everything works out with this experience and continue searching for great options!

Best regards,
Gina Roca
