Tori’s Answer

If you are thinking about a career in accounting that may not necessarily be in a "corporate setting", you may want to consider a career as a "Production Accountant" in the entertainment industry. The next time you watch a movie, look for the production accountants listed in the actual 'film credits' section. Production accountants are responsible for managing finances and maintaining financial records during TV and film productions. Some production accountants may also travel with the production team for stage plays. It is recommended that production accountants have a good working knowledge of the filmmaking process in addition to bookkeeping and accountancy skills.

Kristina’s Answer

There are many options with an accounting degree. You can go in many directions that may not be in a corporate environment. There is the public accounting route which is more corporate, but an accountant can also work in many other business settings that won't necessarily be corporate. You can work in business management or at a family office. Many other opportunities come after having experience in public accounting.

Kristina recommends the following next steps:

Look for some intern opportunities at places that seem to be a good fit.

Ben’s Answer

Working as an accountant can be different depending on the organization that you work for. Most organizations need accountants and the culture and needs for each of the organization can determine some of the day to day experience. For example working as an accountant for a professional sports team, a fortune 50 company, a small non-profit, a CPA firm can all be very different. As a rule having an eye for detail, problem solving, communication (both written and verbal), and data analysis are all important skills to have.

Ben recommends the following next steps:

I would suggest reaching out to different accountants who work in different organizations and see if you can shadow them or have a quick informational interview to discuss their day to day. This will give you some insight into the variability of their day to days.

Alex’s Answer

I think that every individual will go about answering this question in a different way because it is all about you as a person. For some people, the "corporate setting" is great and they prosper in the environment. For others, this environment is not for them and it brings them down.

The only way that I can answer this question is by saying that you really have to just give it a try. I have watched a couple speeches by Gary Vaynerchuk (Look him up on Youtube) and he basically says that it doesn't matter if you are only at a company for a couple months and then decide to leave, it matters whether or not you like working where you're working.
