Alexis’s Answer

Audra, depending on your experience level and office, your day could range greatly! But from a personal viewpoint, with 11 years experience and my own office (shared with the hubster), a typical day goes like this:

1) Get up and get our two girls ready and out the door to school

2) Get ready and head to the office

3) Answer emails and make phone calls to clients or consultants

4) Review code items, review project concerns, markup drawings, and/or draw in Revit (3D drawing program)

5) Stop by the construction site, take pictures, answer contractor questions

6) Come back to the office and continue with items 3 and 4

7) Leave the office and run errands (grocery shopping, stop at post office, etc.)

8) Pick up girls from school, make dinner, hang out as a family, and put girls in bed

9) Continue for an hour or so with items 3 and 4

10) Get ready for bed and SLEEP

11) Start all over again

A day can bring on lots of challenges, all which are impacted by your personal life too. Being an architect is definitely all inclusive, but it you love it enough, a day like the one above won't be too overwhelming :) The goal is to do something in your life that brings you joy. Being an architect does that for me.

Alexis recommends the following next steps:

Contact your local AIA office and see if you can shadow an architect for a day. It will open your eyes to things you never imagined was part of the field. And you can hopefully gain a mentor in the process.
