What is the best way to gain experience in the biology field while earning a degree?

As I’ve looked for jobs and opportunities to gain experience and help me as I pursue a career in the biology field, I have found that almost any job that is related to my field requires years of experience in the field. How do you overcome this barrier so you gain the experience necessary to begin your career after college?

I agree with the previous answer listed here as well! I think looking into becoming a research assistant in a research lab might be very beneficial for you. Definitely look into what labs are nearby for you to potentially get involved with!

Aaron’s Answer

Hi Chelsie,

A lot of jobs do require experience these days. The best advice I can give is to look for a Lab Technician job. These jobs are not only flexible they serve as a way to get into labs, see work, and feel comfortable in the lab.

Alternatively, you could collect experience via Internships in your area, depending on how scientific your area is.

However, the most sought after way of accumulating Undergrad experience is by entering into Work Studies or Research with professors in your University. It often time may not pay much, but does allow you to be a bit more hands-on and professors are great professional connections to make. I would recommend trying to enter into research with a professor your Sophomore year (use you Freshman year to explore, make friends, etc.). Hope this helps, and Goodluck!

Aaron recommends the following next steps:

Review your Professor's Research interests.
Visit and Apply to join their teams.
Search for Lab Tech positions.
Apply for Flexible ones, or those best suited for your future.
Keep your grades up. No matter what, grades come first! Find a healthy balance!
