What skills should I focus on developing during my internship to increase my chances of securing a full-time position at the same company? #Fall24
Hi, I'm currently interning at an amazing company as an intern. I want to make a good impression so I've been working extra hard to demonstrate my passion and loyalty. However, I'm not sure how to bring up the conversation of transitioning out of an intern position into a full-time position.

An internship is a critical experience in giving you on the job training, thus preparing you for the first steps of your career. Making the leap from intern to full-time employee is an exciting milestone in your career journey. This transition, though, requires much more from you that requires careful planning, proactive communication, and a willingness to adapt to new challenges. Here are some tips on how to take advantage of your internship experiences so that when you start your job as a full time employee, you are able to transition from ‘trainee’ to employee smoothly.
🔄 SEEK FEEDBACK AND TAKE INITIATIVE: During your internship, actively seek feedback from your supervisors and colleagues on your performance and areas for improvement. Use this feedback as an opportunity to learn and grow, demonstrating your willingness to take initiative and develop your skills. Ask for specific examples and actionable advice to help you refine your strengths and address any weaknesses before transitioning to a full-time role.
⚙️ BUILD STRONG RELATIONSHIPS: Cultivating strong relationships with your coworkers and supervisors is key to a successful transition from intern to employee. Take the time to get to know your colleagues on a personal and professional level, showing genuine interest in their work and contributing positively to team dynamics. Building rapport with your coworkers will not only make the transition smoother but also create a supportive network to help you succeed in your new role.
🪙 DEMONSTRATE YOUR VALUE: As you transition to a full-time employee, continue to demonstrate your value to the organization by consistently delivering high-quality work and exceeding expectations. Take on new challenges and responsibilities with enthusiasm, showcasing your skills and expertise while demonstrating your commitment to the company's success. Look for opportunities to contribute innovative ideas and solutions, positioning yourself as a valuable asset to your team and the organization as a whole. Demonstrating your value is a key to making yourself integral to the organization, increasing the likelihood of positive references or even a return job offer.
🧭 ADAPT TO COMPANY CULTURE: Every workplace has its own unique culture and norms, and adapting to these cultural nuances is essential for a successful transition from intern to employee. Observe the company culture closely, paying attention to communication styles, decision-making processes, and organizational dynamics. Embrace the company's values and ethos, aligning your behavior and work ethic with the company's mission and goals.
🗣️ASK FOR THE JOB: Remember, employers actually want to hire interns. In fact, 80% of employers view recruiting as the primary function of internships. The easiest way for you to communicate you want the job is to just ask for it. By following the above steps, an you can make it clear throughout your entire internship that you are interested in staying with the organization.
Internships can be daunting, especially for someone who truly wants to turn it into a full-time position. Hopefully this advice is a good way to make starting your career a reality.

Meet and learn about the people in the company. Get to know what they need and how they work. Ask for responsibilities on projects and teams, to become valuable. Always be curious.

There are "hard skills" and "soft skills". Hard skills are the skills you bring directly from your education and experiences, and you should focus on refining and expanding that at every opportunity. But an internship is a great way to develop your "soft skills". How you get along with the workplace culture. Understanding how to act and communicate with different people. Showing your workplace that you not only can handle the work, but are the right fit for the workplace culture is a good combination!

Dear Iris,
Thanks for your question.
If you like the company where you are currently doing Internship , and what you do at the job , then there you should be open about your plans to work as a full time employee to your manager . I am sure if there is an opening then they can consider you .
There could be more managers within the same company looking for someone to fill a position , so you should take every opportunity to talk to people from other teams .
Be open with your manager , and say how much you like working with your team and manager, and also what you appreciate about them and also the company . I would say, start looking for a full time position and don't delay . The chances for your to find a full time position are much higher when you are working for them as an Intern .
Hope this helps !
Thanks and Regards,
Jerin
