I am studying abroad this summer in Valencia, Spain and was wondering what are some of the best ways to integrate myself into the culture?

I want to get the most out of studying abroad because it is a once in a lifetime opportunity. However, I am nervous that I am going to be too shy to talk to the people there. #Spain #study-abroad #foreign-languages

Hi! I'm from Valencia and I recommend you to: adapt to Spaniard's life schedule (breakfast 8am, lunch at 2pm, dinner 9pm); go out and enjoy the good weather; try all types of food in the beach area and in the historic area; workout (running, biking); enjoy night life (go get some drinks on Thursday, Friday or Saturday night). Have a lot of fun!

Hey Diana!

So glad to hear you are studying abroad! Prepare for a grand adventure, I guarantee it! When I studied abroad(Europe) it completely changed my perspective on life.

I would definitely recommend you to do research on the culture out there. Look up the language and the area you will be visiting. Make sure you are financially set: try to convert your money before getting there so you won't have trouble paying for things and also let your bank account aware you are traveling there if you will bring any credit/debit cards. Look up the way people of Valencia dress so you can dress appropriately and not look too much of a "tourist". Also be mindful of the transportation out there! If you can, spend time getting familiar with the map of where you'll be before hand. And most importantly don't plan a full on day, because I guarantee you the new sights and environment will draw you to do things spontaneously!

I'm so excited for you! You will definitely come back a changed person!

Feel free to ask me for any follow up questions!

Jordan, CareerVillage.org Team recommends the following next steps:

Research the part of Valencia you will be in
Get familiar with the basics of the language
Financially prepare (with your money and your bank!)
Look up appropriate attire in Valencia
Thank you comment icon Diana- I'm so excited for your study abroad experience in Spain! I spent a year studying abroad in China and it was an AMAZING time. I'd follow through on Jordan's comments and also ask you to consider putting yourself out there and making friends with the locals. Perhaps there's a local student at your university/program looking to practice their English and you two can improve your language skills together while exploring the city together. Nothing beats making friends with the locals! Good luck out there :) . yoonji KIM, Admin

Hi Diana,

How exciting! Download a learning app like Duo Lingo, to help you get the basic's down so you can gain some confidence in the simple interactions like buying something in the shop or saying hello to someone.

Get involved in the school's group's and although it might be a little out of your comfort zone to start remember there are plenty of people who are also shy and trying to make friends!

Raquel’s Answer

Firstly, kudos to you for making the fantastic decision to relocate to Spain for some time.

Valencia, with its vibrant culture, is indeed one of the most thrilling places in Spain. It's a charming mix of sun-kissed beaches, delectable cuisine, and welcoming locals.

To truly immerse yourself in the Spanish way of life, it would be beneficial to learn some Spanish phrases. Don't worry if you're not fluent; the locals appreciate any effort to communicate in their language as not many of them are multilingual.

Make sure to savor the local delicacies, like the scrumptious paella. It's a must-try! Also, don't miss out on participating in the rich traditions and cultural events, such as the Fallas.

Wishing you all the best. Enjoy every moment of your adventure!

Best regards,
Raquel
