If I decided to go into the Air Force for Nursing how much/ how long would it take to become a Registered Nurse ?

I'm a junior in high school graduating as a CNA (Certified Nursing assistant). I am interested in going into the air force for a cheaper college. However I'm not sure how long it takes to get to that position.

Hi LaRissa,

As a veteran from the U.S. Navy, I suggest that if you want to become a nurse, you should first go to school and get your Bachelor's in Nursing before joining the military. Having a degree, especially in the medical field, gives you a chance to join the Air Force or any military branch as an officer. Being an officer means better pay, nicer living conditions, and more responsibility. The best part of joining as an officer is that you already have your degree, so you won't need to juggle school and military duties. I'm not sure how easy it would be to get a nursing degree while on active duty. The Air Force might make it easier to study compared to other branches. My advice is to think about your choices, but make sure to get your degree first, whether you join or not! You might also consider AFROTC while you're in college.

Good luck!

Forever - is my first thought. Most of the people I saw on VA scholarships tended to join after they left service. Nursing school is not something you can do on the side. So you would have to put a few years in, and then start your prerequisites, then finally get to your school. Most of the veterans in my class were in their thirties.
