Being someone who has both an educational background and some practical experience in the field of tourism and hospitality management, i can share a well-rounded perspective on the pros and cons of pursuing a career in hospitality.
This industry offers a wide range of career opportunities in hotel management, event planning and tourism with strong job stability and great transferable skills such as leadership and communication. It paves a way for a dynamic work environment, international opportunities and the ability to create memorable guest experiences.
Despite all these it can be challenging as well, for instance; physically demanding task, long and irregular hours, low entry level salaries and dealing with difficult customers. Although it is emotional draining, hospitality is a rewarding field for those passionate about service and willing to to navigate its demands and as well if you are someone who love studying humans and there behavioral patterns this will help you to cope with guest irrespective of who they are or where they come from.
NB: As you begin your training, ensure you focus on developing both the technical skills of hospitality as well as the emotional resilience required for the job. Since 15 I’ve been in the restaurant business. From a cook to an executive chef, to having my name on restaurants around the globe my career has fulfilled every dream and goal I set. Exciting career, you can start a career anywhere you would enjoy living. Applying yourself opens doors to unlimited opportunities and financial wealth. It’s a business that requires desire to be the best, work as hard as needed to move up, and at times comes with no life as you work. That said, how you apply yourself becomes the payoff of going as far as you like.

Sarah’s Answer

It definitely depends on your life goals and what area of study you mean by "hospitality," which can range of house keeping at a hotel, to line cook in a four star kitchen, to host at the diner down the road. Broadly speaking, you can live anywhere in the world and get a job even if you don't speak the language. There are always jobs you can do in the hospitality space.

Cons would include that most jobs start out every level and low pay in the field, so it's important to go in and work hard so you can move up quickly. You have to deal with people a lot usually which can be good, but it can also be really tough and you have to have think skin.

If you aren't going into the industry and just taking some classes in hospitality, or can be helpful in almost any career you choose and in daily life. The skills are very transferable.

Tom’s Answer

Hi Elizabeth, when it comes to F&B or food service in general, there are lots of benefits in the field. Some of these pros include, learning new skills, strengthening your knowledge (temps, cuts, sanitation, food safety, and even in time going into learning the management side of a restaurant or kitchen), chances to grow in your career (ex: working your way from dish all the way to Executive Chef), depending on the company it typically pays fairly well and discovering if this field is right for you and potentially opening a love for food that may guve you the urge to learn more and attend culinary school. Some of the cons would be typically no breaks (especially BOH staff), long hours, small meals in between for yourself, high turnover rate (kitchens arent for everyone sadly) and working holidays and most weekends. No worries though, because if this is something youre passionate about then you may go very far in your career and just may become head chef one day! Best of luck!

Tom recommends the following next steps:

Try applying to jobs in food service and work the kitchen for a while to see if you like it before going to school. Sounds weird, but its better to have an idea of what the work is like and if you enjoy it before you pay for an education.

Quimey’s Answer

Choosing hospitality as a career depends on your interests and lifestyle preferences. If you thrive in dynamic, people-focused environments and are open to working non-traditional hours, hospitality can offer fulfilling experiences and global career opportunities. However, if you prioritize stability, work-life balance, and lower stress, the demands of the industry may pose challenges.
