I got into the StandOut Connect program this year and I applied because I heard it was a very competitive thing. However, they are asking for $2000 for the 4 month program. They would give me internships with alumni from top colleges after graduation but i don’t know if it’s worth it?

As someone who has participated in the program before, I highly recommend it! The program starts in the first month with a set of weekly workshops aimed at building soft skills such as resume building and interviewing. Not only that, but we meet professionals in different fields who help guide us through the different skills we learn.
I had a strong interest in politics and education, so when I received interview offers, it was with companies I knew I would enjoy interning at. For my interviews, I was nervous to say the least, but StandOut Connect was very supportive and offered all the tools necessary to succeed. Which is why when I spoke with the interviewers, I had much more confidence answering the questions and was even able to bond with a few of the interviewers. In the end, I decided to intern for a political tech company and spent three amazing months working on various projects.
I was able to meet amazing individuals and gain valuable skills along the way. One thing I heard in my time at StandOut Connect was, “The first internship will always be nerve-wracking, but once you have one, it will be easier to get another one.” And I say this because any new experience is worthwhile; it just takes dedication and hard work.

I completed the StandOut Connect program and thought it was worth it. The tuition covers the professional training they give you where they help you build a resume, learn various professional tools, and connect with companies for interviews until you find an internship. I interned with a company in the political space and am still in touch with my mentor today. If you're starting out, don’t have connections, and want something that gets you started in the right direction, it could be worth it. I know they also offer full refunds if you are not happy with the program.

Hi! I am a current freshman at Georgetown University and I was a part of the StandOut Connect Summer Cohort in 2024. I would highly recommend this program to anyone interested. I found the investment into the program to be worth it as the resumé building and workshop process allowed me to gain valuable networking skills, and interact with a series of top business professionals (lawyers, doctors, entrepreneurs, business people, etc.), gaining invaluable career insights. I was able to leverage this experience throughout the formal interview process, and received offers from every company I interviewed with. I ended up accepting an offer to work remotely at a decentralized fintech startup based out of California, where I worked on research and data analytics. I was given the unique opportunity to perform hands-on work within the company, despite being a high schooler. I conducted competitive analysis, produced reports on mergers and acquisitions in the Crypto space, and more! The experience and mentorship (Harvard alum) that I gained throughout this internship would not have been possible in high school without the structure and opportunities provided by the StandOut Connect Program. I was also able to utilize my work experience throughout the college application process in the activities section, supplementals, and interviews, catching the attention of numerous admissions officers. I ultimately received acceptance to numerous T-20 Universities in the U.S and T-10 Universities in Europe. I would be happy to answer any further questions you have about the program, and could not recommend it enough.

Hi, Sanya. I have not heard of this program before, which may say something because I have been advising high-achieving students on college admissions for close to 20 years. Plus, the Polsky Center doesn't mention this program at all (see link below). If StandOut Connect is so prestigious, wouldn't the University of Chicago continue to take some credit?
Also, the College Confidential thread (see link below) raises some good points, such as:
- if you are providing valuable input to companies, why are you paying for this program? Shouldn't you be paid?
- how meaningful an experience and how deep could relationships be from an online-only internship?
Note that there is a free database of high school internships from Standout (see link below). That may provide the assistance you find a meaningful internship experience on your own.
That said, see If you are offered the internship, if you are offered a scholarship, and what other opportunities you identify. You and your parents will make the right decision. Good luck!

There are a few ways for you, as a high school student with little or no experience, to gain beneficial experiences in your field of interest without paying for it and without relying on the remote virtual only Stand Out Connect Program.
The Stand Out Connect Program is not competitive since you can do it if you pay the money you said they are asking for. It is a new thing, established only 4 years ago by students. My advice is that this may be useful and affordable for some students who do not care to get a fully integrated experience working with real people in real offices or work environments, but I would advise you to not do it, rather do an in person volunteer work project. You can get an Internship later on in college - one that you won't have to pay for.
My first suggestion is to visit your local Chamber of Commerce and explain that you are offering to be a volunteer at a business connected to your interest. Also go to your local public Library. Doing things in person will help you develop communication and presentational skills and people will remember you. Also ask a teacher that teaches a subject connected to your interest if they know of places to do volunteer work. Volunteering will teach you A LOT - about your career, about other people and about yourself.
If one of your parents is in the field of work that you want to go into, ask if you can spend a day at work with them if their manager approves. Another way to get a head start in your field of interest is to talk with your guidance counselor about Dual Enrollment which is taking a college course at a community college while you are in high school - and it's free.
With a bit of searching online, footwork and persistence, you will find a valuable real life volunteer experience to learn and have hands on interaction in your field. This is the best, sound advice I can give you.
