What are some good "first" jobs for teenagers looking to gain job experience near San Francisco?

I am currently a junior in highschool. Preferably a part-time after school job because that's when I have time.

Hey Timmy!

It's awesome that you're looking for a part-time job while still in high school—getting early work experience will set you up for success no matter what career you pursue.

About the best First Jobs Near San Francisco 🤔 here is what I can say, Since you're interested in finance, try to find jobs that give you skills in customer service, communication, and money management. Here are a few great options:

1. Bank Teller Internships – Some banks have internship programs for high school students. It’s worth visiting local branches to ask!

2. Retail or Cashier Jobs – Working at Target, Safeway, or a local store will give you hands-on experience handling money and customers.

3. Administrative Assistant at a Small Business – Many local businesses need help with paperwork, organizing, or even social media management.

4. Tutoring – If you're good at math, science or even tech tutoring younger students could be a great way to earn money while reinforcing your finance skills.

5. Internships at Financial Firms – Some firms in the Bay Area offer internships for high school students interested in finance. Try cold-emailing local financial advisors to ask!

6. Tech or Startup Jobs – Many SF startups offer internships in marketing, data entry, or even basic finance tasks. Check out AngelList for startup job postings.

7. Side Hustles – If you're entrepreneurial, you can start reselling sneakers, flipping items on eBay, or managing social media for small businesses.

How to Get Hired Fast

Network! Ask family, teachers, and friends if they know anyone hiring.

Visit in person. Dropping by a business and asking about job opportunities can be more effective than applying online.

Create a resume. Even if you don’t have work experience, highlight your skills, school projects, and extracurriculars.

Let me know if you need help with anything, I'd be happy to help. Good luck, Timmy!

Dr recommends the following next steps:

Get a Work Permit – Your school counselor can help with this.
Make a List of Nearby Businesses – Walk around town and note places hiring.
Apply to at Least 5 Jobs or Internships – More applications = better chances.
Consider Volunteer Work – Nonprofits and community programs can help you build skills for a future finance career.
Keep Learning – Online finance courses (like on Coursera or Khan Academy) can give you a head start.

Hi Timmy!

I will say serving/bartending is a fantastic money-making part time job. I did this from my sophomore year in high school until 2020 (when Covid shut everything down). When all is said and done I worked in the service industry for about 14 years. I met so many amazing people over those years and these skills are skills you can use at any point in life!

Serving and bartending provides you with numerous skills that you can use in all aspects of life like Patience, How to talk to people (interpersonal skills), and How to deal with really difficult people while keeping a smile on your face (because your income depends on it).

I made more money as a bartender and server than I do working my current full time job. I highly recommend this in an area like San Francisco (tons of amazing food/drink spots out there as well as wealthy people).

Hello, Timmy !

I see by your profile that you are interested in becoming a Financial Advisor as a future career. Seeking a part time job in or around San Francisco will take being open to what may be available.

At 16 or 17, in California, you will need to obtain a Work Permit/Working Papers from your high school and whichever employer hires you will need to have a Permit to Employ and Work if you work there. The best first job would be something that you enjoy doing and something that you know how to do.

Look into the Greenager Program in your city. This is offered through the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department and Port of San Francisco. In the summer, there is Enterprise for Youth which offers paid internships. You can look up and read about these programs online or ask your school guidance counselor or social worker about them.

The Office of Financial Empowerment in San Francisco has free financial counseling and workshops for teenagers. Getting this education for personal finance very well may give you a head start and a basic foundation for what you'd learn in college. For employment in your city and the Bay Area, you will need to explore what may be available and fit into your schedule. Do not rule out volunteer work or any type of employment, even if it is not connected to finance just yet.

Unlike in other countries, there are some financial advisory companies in San Francisco that are open to offering internships to teens interested in the field of Finance, teens who want to gain knowledge of the work. Make a list of all the Financial Advisory companies in the San Francisco Bay Area and visit as many of them in person to ask about an Internship. I suggest going in person because you may not hear back as quick as you would if you do it in person directly, face to face.

So it's more than what would be a good first job, it is more reliant on what type of experience you want, how flexible you can be and doing first hand looking around to see what is available. While in High School, any experience you gain will sharpen the skills you'll need for college whether it is paid or unpaid or in or out of the finance field.

I hope this helps and I welcome you to return here to Career Village and I wish you all the best !

I would advise you to explore different fields, join clubs, take online courses, and gain hands-on experience to find your interests; as a freshman, focus on mastering basics, managing time, networking, and building projects.
