Mentorship Question?

If you could get mentorship from any professional in your field, who would it be and why? #Spring25

Hi Dayana,

Good that your thinking about mentorship, as I believe it can be a great help to individuals and often overlooked as a way to become the best person you can be in life. I had a great mentor when I was a young professional and remember to this day, at age 65. I was a Management Analyst and he was an Executive and we meet regularly to discuss career and personal development. Really opened my eyes and I think helped me chart my own course if action(s) as he provided suggestions and options and didn't push me to a specific path.

Now, late in life, I realized I could have had many such mentors for different reasons throughout my journey which I think would have helped navigate the often rough and challenging times life presents

So, I encourage you to start and find a mentor for the challenge you are facing now, whatever it is . In my case, he worked at the same company but if your in school, maybe find an alumni. If your in a club organization, maybe an elder or senior member or officer. I think you get the idea. Start with people you know about recommendations s they will gladly help you and maybe even give you a referral or contact to talk to.

Hi Dayana,
This is a great question. I think mentors are important throughout your personal and professional life and can provide value and perspective. Mentors in your chosen career field can help especially at the company you work with can help you navigating company policies, procedures and build your career with that company. Looking outside your company for mentors is another great idea to build other relationships in your field and open your eyes to other opportunities. I would even suggest looking outside your interests/profession for mentors as often a different perspective can make all the difference. Good luck!

If I could seek mentorship from any professional in my field, it wouldn’t be one specific person or title. Over time, I’ve learned that the most impactful mentorship often comes from people who are willing to be honest about their journey, especially the parts that weren’t linear or easy.

At this point in my career and life, I’ve been very intentional about seeking mentorship from women partners who also have children—not just one, but many. I wanted to understand their different paths, the decisions they made along the way, and how they navigated career growth alongside family life. Hearing a range of perspectives helped me realize there isn’t a single “right” way to build a successful career, and that balance can look different in different seasons.

I’m also drawn to mentors who are open about challenges and trade-offs, not just successes. I value conversations about hard decisions, pivots, and moments of uncertainty just as much as advice on advancement. Many of these relationships started informally—by asking thoughtful questions about career paths, priorities, and lessons learned.

Ultimately, what matters most to me in a mentor isn’t having all the answers, but being willing to share perspective, ask good questions, and help me think through my own decisions. That approach has helped me build confidence, self-awareness, and a career that feels both sustainable and authentic.
