How impactful is networking?

I'm Shiloh, a 7th grader who hopes to pursue a career in aerospace and eventually become an astronaut. Currently I'm building my portfolio to get a scholarship that can boost my career. Students are often encouraged to build strong networks, but it can be difficult to understand the real impact, in aerospace or any related fields, how much do professional relationships influence career opportunities, and in what ways? Are there any opportunities, mentors, internships, jobs, or projects that you likely would not have obtained without the relationships you built along the way?

Do I need a research mentor if I plan on conducting secondary research?

Hello! My name is Sanvhi and I am a rising junior. This summer and in the following months, I plan on conducting secondary research on the connection between architecture and domestic violence in India, exploring how spaces can impact the increase or decrease in violence taking place. To be honest, I am not completely sure how having a mentor works. In my research about it, I learned that I would assist them with their findings, and others different stories. I have heard that it is best to have a mentor for research, but since my research is not something I believe I can do with primary data I have gathered, I am not sure if I need one. If I did have one, I honestly am not sure what we would be able to discuss, or how they would be able to help me. Please let me know what you think. Thank you!

What actions would you recommend for someone starting college who’s interested in how contracts and roster decisions shape sports teams, and how can I start building relationships or finding guidance early on ?

I first got interested in this playing Franchise mode in MLB The Show, and it got me paying attention to how teams are actually built and run. I’m starting college in the fall and am leaning toward the business and legal side of sports. I’m trying to figure out what I can start doing early to move in that direction.

How do you figure out the right career path for yourself and what would you recommend doing early in college to explore different options without falling behind?

I'm a freshman in college and am about to finish my spring semester. I already feel like I'm running out of time to figure out my major and career goals. I don't know how I'm supposed to transfer from community college to a 4 year by the fall semester if I still have no clue what I want to do in my future.

What were the most valuable career experiences that you had before becoming a professor, and what would you recommend checkpoints would you recommend me to pursue on my own journey to become one, specifically in the engineering field?

I'm a student pursuing a doctorate in the engineering field, specifically chemical or biomedical depending on what classes I end up enjoying more or excelling at in college. I'm super passionate about sharing my knowledge, but I also always want to continue learning myself, so I want to become a professor, so that I have the opportunity to teach others while also doing research with other professors and students at the university. I understand that it's important to have research experience and to get papers published for this kind of career, but I'm not sure what else would be helpful in the profession or even just in landing the job. I want to know what opportunities would help me with this, without delaying my plans for too long.

How can I turn my background and challenges into strengths while pursuing a career as a Respiratory Therapist and building a better and secure future for my family and I?

I come from south central, a low income community and raised by a single mother who early on showed me the true meaning of resilience. I started pursuing college but just like the rest of the world my plans were disrupted by Covid. shortly after I became pregnant and later became a military spouse. constant transitions have made it difficult to maintain a stable job. Despite these challenges I want to continue my education to create stability for myself and family while becoming yet another example and strong resilient woman for myself and my son. I am currently trying to navigate how to stay on track on my educational aspirations and short/term long term goals while managing financial balancing and no support from family.

If you are interested in majoring in political science or computer science in hopes of becoming a lawyer or knowledge scientist, which extracurriculars or internships should you look for to provide you with the best experience for post-graduation?

I am interested in both computer science and law, having not yet exactly decided a specific major. Once I do decide, I want to be able to get as much experience as possible and knowledge about the career path. I hope to acquire an internship or mentor that can provide helpful insight and/or experience in these careers that I can utilize after graduation.

How do you remain motivated as a first-generation when obstacles have steered you away from your original path but continue to strive to reach your dreams while carving your own lane?#Spring25

I'm not your traditional college student and faced some hardships early on in my academic journey, which resulted in a couple of gap years. Nevertheless, I've stayed dedicated to forging my own path toward achieving my dreams of ultimately serving in the medical field. I am proud to be a community college graduate and am transferring to complete my undergraduate degree. I understand how long a road and how intentional you have to be with pursuing the medical field. I'm curious about how to stay motivated and build relationships with medical professionals early in my journey. In particular, I'd like to know how newcomers can access internship and research opportunities that are not readily available to students who do not fit the conventional profile.
