What do I do as a high school sophomore that wants to explore architecture or civil engineering?
Where do I start in my career to explore architecture and civil engineering? (Job shadowing, internship, mentorship) What are some opportunities in New York that I can find for this subjects? (I'm a sophomore in high school)

We (Maple Heights High School) to have a three-year mechanical drawing course and I was able to ace calculus senior year. After learning AutoCAD r12 for DOS the following summer, I landed my first real job with a corner office, desktop computer and pen plotter drawing office layouts for a company that warehoused used modular furniture. Architecture & engineer both require five to six years plus a two to three-year internship for licensure. It's a long road and difficult, so getting a head start while your young and staying focused on the long-term goal is the key to success.

As a high school student you can begin exploring your career interests now and have a good foundation for when you start college. Now is a great time to discover the information that is involved in the careers as well as take classes in high school that will sharpen your skills for a future career in architecture or engineering.
The Center for Architecture would be a great place for you to start ! It's in Manhattan at LaGuardia Place and has educational programs for you and students up to 12th grade. There is a summer program, teen workshops an Architecture and Design College Fair happening this October, so many things to discover. I have left a link to their website for you below so that you can get a glimpse of everything before you visit there.
You can also have an awesome opportunity to get a mentored internship through the New York City Science Research Mentoring Consortium ! They are located at Central Park West and 79th Street in Manhattan. This is exciting for a real world experience with the engineering career you are interested in. I have left their website link below for you to discover more about this.
Once you become involved with these organizations, they will probably have a wealth of resources to share with you. I would highly advise getting involved with them as they could be your initial contact that leads to other opportunities.
You can get involved in any clubs, activities or events connected with architecture, design, engineering and STEM at your school, too. There's lots of opportunity where you live, it's just a matter of getting out there and networking once you have a couple of leads as to where to go. In a city like yours, you can really have some fun with this too ! Consider visiting the Skyscraper Museum on Battery Place for some fun. I have left the link for it below.
