Dear Isabella,

I worked as a Creative Director of my own small business for a number of years. I have always found the most Inspiration from God, I also find endless Inspiration in the people I work with and the numberless good people and good things in the world. It's all about where you choose to Focus your gaze. If you look for Good and Inspiration, you will find it in abundance. If you focus on the Bad, you will miss out on so much. As The Master said, "Seek, and Ye Shall Find."

Sincerely, your Brother,

Hi Isabella! Great question! I'm not labeled as a Creative Director, but I've worked over the years with many and I have to be my own "creative director" when deciding how I will fulfill an assignment as an illustrator. In fact, I would think anyone involved in a creative profession as an employer or employee of some kind acts as their own Creative Director.

It's basically using the skills we develop in our everyday lives in developing and executing all the ideas and tasks we have, but to a higher level that involves more people, financial considerations, and having the results adhere to a goal that benefits the customers or clients and the company or
organization you're a part of. This might involve visual concepts, designs, and strategies for whatever the project might be.

One must pay close attention to what they think people like and use, whether it's a large group of people or a smaller slice of the population. What do they relate to most in terms of visual preferences, product preferences, how they like to be "talked" to, music and sound preferences, and overal taste preferences.

This means, perhaps, trying to not overlook the little things in an ordinary day that might both relate to what you enjoy experiencing and what others are enjoying too, and then relating those to the goals of a particular project you're working on. I know this is more of a general than specific response, but the answer really depends on the things the creative director chooses to focus on and then use in the way they work to create something, either with their team or on their own.

Anything can be an inspiration to a creative director. It just depends upon the final result desired and how those things in your day, big or small, fit in with that goal.

I hope that helps you to think about what might help you in your quest to progress forward in your career.

All the best,
Ron

Do plenty of research! Discover what kind of work excites you and what doesn't, and understand why. This is important! Inspiration is everywhere—your family, friends, professionals, colleagues, classmates, teachers, and community.

Spend some time, at least five days a week, to meditate and reflect. Think about where you are now, where you were a year ago, and where you want to be in a year. It’s okay if these goals change over time.

Read books for fun and let the author's creativity spark your own imagination.

Watch commercials with a thoughtful eye and heart. Ask yourself if they inspired you, turned you off, or left you feeling nothing.

Mindfulness is a wonderful way to look within and find inspiration. Enjoy the journey!
