A super easy start is to simply go to your professors' office hours and ask what research opportunities are available for freshman in your department. You can also email the department's main email address (you can find it on their website) and ask them what research opportunities are available and how it works at your university.

If it's super competitive and hard to get a research role, then find out what other types of roles you can get within the department. You may start off cleaning the lab or taking care of the animals on weekends, but that initiative to do the lower-level work will really show that you're dedicated to research. It will pay off.

FWIW - I'd recommend not trying to get into research your first semester - it's a big transition on its own. But if you're really interested in it, then go for it!

If you want to land a neuroscience research position at University of California, Los Angeles, start by exploring the university`s faculty labs that excite you and send brief, personalized emails expressing your interest. Actively network with UCLA alumni, current lab members, and student organizations through LinkedIn and campus groups. Use resources like the Undergraduate Research Center, Handshake, and BruinView to look for opportunities, and attend seminars, meetups, and office hours to build meaningful connections.

Keep growing your skills through online courses in neuroscience and programming languages like Python or R, and make sure to practice regularly. Stay informed with research newsletters and apply to programs such as the Undergraduate Research Scholars Program and summer internships. Engage with online communities like ResearchGate and Reddit, and consider internships or volunteer work with organizations like NeuroTechX. By staying curious, proactive, and persistent, you’ll strengthen your profile, increase your chances of landing a meaningful research role at UCLA, and set yourself up for success in the field.
