Irene’s Answer

Hi!
I am a really successful garment industry professional, despite the fact that my family was strongly opposed to me pursuing it.

My grandfather came from a long line of family owned lingerie manufacturer: in those years it was all hand-embroidered and hand-stitched underwear, night gowns, morning coats and such. He was a very talented tailor himself, though it wasn't his profession. My parents and grandparent were adamant about their position: 'Let other people make clothes for you. You've got other talents you can pursue to become an engineer or a machine designer, for example'

I was really swayed by their opinion when I was 17, and enrolled into an engineering school. I graduated with honors at 21, and still switched my career path then to study Fashion Design and Manufacturing. Eventually, I got a second college degree.

I guess, my handling of the nay-sayers wasn't a very good example to follow. But they were the closest people to me, and knew me really well.
If you feel strong passion for Fashion Design, go to a good Fashion or Art school. You'll have a chance to learn how express your creative ideas in actual clothing items or art projects. Just doing it will quiet those people who didn't believe in your dreams, and you will get a real satisfaction from your work.

Veronica’s Answer

Hi Remiyah,

As with all dreams and plans, most can't see it as clearly as the dreamer. I suggest fleshing out your plans, writing down your dreams and you can work backwards from there. Having steps and a vision help you to stay on track and not give up when people don't support you or see your dreams.

Fashion has a lot of people with plans and they aren't going to make space for you. It can be a brutal industry, but so are you. Develop a thicker skin, and being able to take positive criticism. Be sure to take space and stand up for your plans.

Writing these things down will remind you why you are doing this and motivating you to keep pushing.

Good luck!
