When do you start feeling confident in your degree?

I'm currently a high school senior going into Video Game Design and Development. I'm excited to start learning the subject, but I'm worried my degree will be not valuable by the time I leave college. Do you have any advice for how to feel confident going into a risky degree?

Absolutely! The truth is, skills matter far more than a degree in game development—or honestly, in most tech fields. I studied computer science, which might sound related, but game design is a totally different beast. Despite that, I landed a job before I even graduated—and they didn’t care about my degree at all. What got me hired were my skills.

If you really want to build confidence and stay ahead, focus on refining your skills by actually building games. Post them on platforms like Steam, Itch.io, Google Play Store, or the App Store. Learn a game engine (like Unity or Unreal Engine), and keep experimenting. If you manage to create a cool game, not only does it act as a strong portfolio piece—it can also generate income. You might not even need to join a company if you can sustain yourself through your own creations.

Game development is no joke—it takes effort and passion—but the beauty is, you have time on your side. Some types of games can absolutely be made by a solo developer or a small team. Just make sure you lay out your design and GDD (Game Design Document) clearly before diving in.

You’ve got this. The degree is just a bonus—the real power lies in what you build.
