During my junior year, I had the incredible opportunity to study abroad for a semester. Before leaving, my academic advisors often talked about reverse culture shock, which is the challenge of adjusting back home after being abroad for a while. At first, I didn't think it was real, but I definitely felt it when I returned!
While you're abroad, make it a point to meet new people and while also staying connected with friends back home. If you can get your home friends to visit when you're feeling homesick, that's a great bonus. When you return, it's normal to miss your friends from abroad. You shared amazing experiences together in a new place! Keep up with phone calls, and if distance is an issue like it was for me and my friends, try to plan regular reunions. We manage to meet up once a year.
Academically, try to maintain some of your study habits while abroad. Depending on your courses, you might find them easier, like I did, which made returning to my home campus a bit challenging. If possible, consider taking some lighter courses when you get back to help ease the transition.
Studying abroad is an incredible journey. You learn so much about the country you're in and discover a lot about yourself as a global citizen. Enjoy every moment!

Hey Sunny! Balancing academics and a social life, especially after studying abroad, comes down to intentional planning and self-awareness. Rebuild your routine by setting clear academic goals while leaving space for social time that energizes you. Stay connected to your study abroad community but also re-engage with campus clubs, events, or friends to ease back into social life. Academically, communicate early with professors and use campus resources like tutoring or advising if you feel out of sync. Give yourself grace because shifting environments takes time, but with purpose and patience, you’ll thrive in both worlds. Good luck!
