How long will it take for manufacturing to really come back to the US? #Spring25

As a Manufacturing Technology student with a focus on Robotics, will this major serve me well? Will there be enough manufacturing jobs in a few years for people like me?

Thank you comment icon Vocational experience will be very important in the US soon enough. I agree with Parixit's relative time frame. That give you plenty of time to you and the rest of us to be ready for the new economy. Leo McKenzie

Parixit’s Answer

While not every manufacturing job will return to the US, there is hope for some to come back in the next 4 to 5 years. The exciting part is that job opportunities in the US are plentiful, especially if you focus on learning robotics. The US is a leader in innovation, with many research projects and prototypes being developed here. This means you will always have the chance to find a job.

Hi Caleb,
Robotics is currently cutting edge technology globally. Opportunities can only get better.
In addition to technical skills, manufacturing requires other important skills. Two crucial approaches that you need to interest yourself in are Total Productive Maintenance & Reliability Centered Maintenance. Both are widely used for operational excellence (World Class Manufacturing).
Total Productive Maintenance deals with such aspects as team based activities, workplace organization for safety and efficiency (5S), elimination of waste, continuous improvement (productivity, quality & cost), planned maintenance activities, manufacturing flexibility, visual performance measurement etc.
Reliability Centered Maintenance is the key driver of modern maintenance. It's main focus is the idea that the consequence of equipment failure should detemine maintenance tasks that need to be carried out on equipment and that understanding the failure process is important for developing effective maintenance tasks. It aims to attain inherent equipment reliability & safety at minimum cost.
Manufacturing Best Practices have largely been developed from these approaches. Associated with them are critical problem solving methodologies that are essential for the success of modern industry.
