What can I do to make the most out of the summer before my first year of college?!

I want to have a fun, but also productive summer as I prepare to embark on my new journey! I'll be attending a college out of state and I just want to make sure that I use the time I have wisely.

Hi Yasmia,

Impressive your asking this and demonstrates you want to make the best out of your upcoming college experience. So, I would suggest you do things to put in place good practices or habits that will fully utilize this opportunity when you start. For instance, you can take a test to assess your study habits and even take a course in effective studying, to insure you do well and get a chance to do many things vs being on probation like I was and then having to spend all my time (and extra money) studying to keep up. Your school guidance counselor can help you with an assessment of your study habits. Also, use chatgpt or other AI tools like Coach, an app by CareerVillage, and explore your field further to help you identify opportunities at college to participate in and further develop your interest and experience, meet people, join clubs, etc. if you do this beforehand you will be able to look for them and seek them out when you start. Many of us do it too late.

Enjoy the journey!

Tony

The summer before college is a golden time - make the most of it!

1. Travel and/or visit new places - if you are on a budget, you don't have to necessarily go far. You can travel using public transport, go on a road trip with friends & family. Exploring a new place widens your appreciation of the world we live in.
2. Learn a new skill (it can be a hobby like painting, playing a musical instrument, taking a Yoga class, trying adventure sports or joining a book club)
3. Shadow someone who is working in the field that you are pursuing your college degree in.
4. Volunteer - you cannot go wrong with volunteering. It ties you to the community and is very rewarding.
5. Do research - check out available opportunities in your local college/university or the one you will be attending
6. Spend quality time with your family and high school friends. Especially if you are going out of town or out of state for college, this can be a great time to just relax with your loved ones.
7. Take a money management course for students (you can find many simple & free courses online) - this is a great way to get a jump start on staying within your budget and learn tips on saving money.
8. Get yourself organized - develop a daily routine, learn to be independent (do your chores, manage your budget etc.)
9. Check out you new college campus and surrounding area (if budget & time will allow it) so that you are already familiar with the local scene before you officially start college.

You don't have to do all of the above, pick what makes sense for your circumstances and go for it.

Good luck in college!
