I would recommend starting your career in public accounting, the experience gained by working with multiple clients and accounting functions helps build a well rounded experience that you can use wherever you end up if public accounting turns out to not be your long-term career path. When interviewing with public accounting firms, I would recommend focusing on your relationship building skills as client relationships are the mainstay of any public accounting firm.

They can help you find and apply for internships, build your business portfolio, and even conduct mock interviews. They also offer advice on small details, like what to wear to interviews. Additionally, start researching accounting or financial firms in your area early. Note important dates on your calendar, as many internship opportunities have short application windows. If you miss these, you might have to wait until the next year to apply to larger firms.

Speaking from my college experience, joining Beta Alpha Psi or Accounting Society as soon as possible to help you build your networks. Since they host many networking events with different firms (both local and national firms), you will get to talk to professionals to learn about the work culture and their experiences. Also, prepare early! Most public accounting firms start recruiting for next year positions pretty early, so keep that in mind! For internships, firms do not expect you to know anything as they will train you and you will learn in the job, just show your willingness to learn and eager to network and have fun! Good luck!

Consider a part-time job, even if it's not related to accounting, or getting involved in your community. Maybe you have a hobby you're passionate about and have become skilled in.
Think about what makes you unique and how that can benefit a future employer. Are you good at juggling different activities, showing strong time management and organization skills? Does your hobby require attention to detail or adaptability?
Once you identify what makes you stand out and the value you bring to future employers, create a quick elevator speech to share this in 2-3 minutes. Use it at networking events to shine!
