What resources were the most useful throughout your graduate-school journey How did you balance your work, school, and personal life without sacrificing your mental, physical, or emotional health? #Spring25

I am a student enrolling in a cell and molecular biology masters degree program, living on her own for the first time. I previously balanced multiple jobs, volunteering, club activities, and athletics throughout my undergraduate degree career; however, I am concerned that due to the rigorous nature of master degree programs, I may run into time constriction related issues. I would love advice on strategies, programs, or helpful resources to help mitigate possible issues that could arise throughout graduate school to best promote a healthy work-school-life balance.

Balancing everything is definitely a challenge, but it’s about setting realistic expectations. You’ve already built great time management skills from juggling jobs, volunteering, and athletics—that experience will serve you well. In grad school, it’s important to ruthlessly prioritize. Not everything will get 100% of your attention all the time, and that’s okay.

I’d also recommend scheduling breaks and downtime the same way you’d schedule class or lab time. Protecting even small amounts of personal time will help prevent burnout. Finally, stay connected with friends, family, or support groups—it’s easy to isolate during busy periods, but having people to check in with can really help maintain your emotional and mental well-being.
