Start by creating a basic resume and adjust it for each job or college application. A resume for college will differ from one for a technical job. No matter what, ensure there are no spelling errors, the formatting is consistent, and the grammar is correct.

Include skills that match the job you want. Use the job description to see what skills are needed.

If applying to college, list your courses, school activities, and activities outside of school. Show that you are well-rounded.

Good luck!

Great question, Isabella.

I do think crafting a resume that has the most impact is somewhat dependent on the career field you are wishing to enter into. For example, an accountancy career path will want you to highlight certain proficiencies and focus on your GPA, academic success, relevant extracurricular activities, and jobs/internships.

Alternatively, if you are in a more creative career path, you would want your resume to reflect your creative skillset, potentially a portfolio of past work, etc.

I do agree that leveraging AI is helpful. If you have a career office/center at your school, use them as a resource as well! Finally, if your network has some people who have similar career interests to yourself, I would tap on those folks to ask them what would help provide you a stand-out resume.

When you describe yourselves, always think how that'll be of use to your potential future employer. When you highlight a skill or experience, write in a way that doing so and so resulted in so and so. Try to quntify the results. Mostly interms of money, afterall money talks!

Exmaple:
Managed a cross functional team in analyzing and optimizing the process flow for new product introduction resulting in $20M anual savings. (capturing the result is the key!)

Also, take a look below how a high school student captured a typical experience in a convicing way..
Tutoring, Newark, NJ - Tutor
● Clearly communicated with kids to ensure comprehension
● Efficiently guided kids through homework to ensure correct answers resulting in higher grades
● Motivated and persuaded kids to exert themselves in educational conversations

Hi Isabella!

That's a great question. When putting together your resume, don’t hesitate to use helpful tools like AI or ask friends for feedback—they can make it easier to highlight your interests, strengths, and skills. Your resume is often your first introduction, so think about what will catch someone’s eye right away. Most importantly, make your resume your own! Tailor it to fit the job, internship, or college you’re applying for so it really reflects who you are.

Best of luck, Isabella!

One of the best tools you can use right now? AI.
Tools like ChatGPT or Gemini can help you refine your resume, tailor it to specific roles, and make your impact more clear—all without starting from scratch each time.

Here’s how to you can use AI to assist you in your resume:

🛠️ 1. Use AI to Tailor Your Resume to a Specific Role
Copy the job or internship description and ask ChatGPT:

“Can you help me tailor my resume for this role? Here’s my current resume and the job posting.”

This helps you speak the same language as the employer and highlight the most relevant skills.

✍️ 2. Use AI to Rewrite Bullet Points for Impact
Paste a basic bullet point like:

“Helped with social media.”
Then ask:
“Can you make this more professional and results-oriented?”
You’ll get something stronger, like:
“Managed social media content for a student organization, increasing engagement by 40% in one semester.”

🔍 3. Use AI to Spot What’s Missing
You can even ask:

“What skills or achievements should I add to stand out for [industry] internships or college applications?”
This gives you a roadmap to build up your experience or reframe what you’ve already done.

You still need to bring your own voice and story—but using AI as your writing coach can make your resume sharper, stronger, and more aligned with the opportunities you're chasing.

Megan’s Answer

The best advice I have received it to make sure everyone can understand what you have done and the impact it made. Can you add metrics to help someone better understand?

For example, your resume may say participated in a Varsity sport for X years. Instead you can say, dedicated 25 hours per week participating in Varsity (sport or club) and received X awards or recognitions for my contributions.

This helps to make people understand and relate to the work you have done! Best of luck!
