Why don't more colleges have Criminal Justice or Criminology fields? #Spring25

I am interested into going into this field but many colleges don't have these majors/minors. #Spring25

Most agencies look at a degree as a degree, not what you have it in. Scott is correct about getting a degree in something you are interested in. A degree in communications, business, economics, chemistry, or biology could be helpful as you explore your career path in law enforcement. Forensics or anthropology could be good fields as well. If you can learn a second language, the would be a plus.

Scott’s Answer

In all honesty, most criminal justice degrees are duplicative and a waste of time if you’re going to be a law enforcement officer of some type. When you attend the agenciy’s academy you ultimately get sent to, they’ll teach you what they want you to know. When you go to college, get a bachelor’s degree in something you are interested in that will make you a more well-rounded candidate for your future employer.

Gregory’s Answer

Hi, this is a great question! I had the same question when I started my career nearly 35 years ago. What I have come to learn is that working in law enforcement does not require you to specifically have a major in criminal justice. Majors in languages, cyber and technology, accounting etc. are all needed skills that will help you in your career. Best of luck.
