What's the best way to find out which field you're interested in ?

I'm a high school senior, heading to Purdue For Industrial Engineering. I chose the major due to its breadth but, of course, at some point I'll have to specialize. I'm currently into teaching and data analytics-related roles but I'm still not quite sure what I want to do as my interests change frequently.

Everyone experiences this phase, and it's completely normal to feel uncertain about which path to choose. I was in the same boat at first. I majored in Computer Science but found myself drawn to the defence sector, so I applied to opportunities in the Army, Navy, and Airforce. Although I made it to the final rounds of many exams, personal issues kept me from succeeding. But remember, life always offers new paths. I started exploring sustainable trends in the market, and now I've been with HP for over 19 years, taking on various roles.

Sofia, I see you're pursuing industrial engineering while also teaching and working in data analytics, which is both impressive and meaningful. Here are some suggestions for you:

1. Follow your curiosity, not just your passion.
2. Do what brings you joy.
3. Experiment actively—try small, low-risk projects, volunteer for something new, or shadow someone in a different field.
4. Connect with people doing exciting things.
5. Embrace evolving interests; you don't have to stick to one thing forever. Careers are more like hiking trails than train tracks—you can change direction and still reach incredible destinations.

I hope this helps, and feel free to reach out if you have more questions!

Hey! First off, it’s awesome that you’re already thinking about this — a lot of people wait way longer to ask that question. Since you’re heading into Industrial Engineering (which is super broad, like you said), the best thing you can do is try stuff early and often.

Take internships, join clubs, shadow people, even do mini projects or certifications online — they don’t have to be perfect, they just help you figure out what feels exciting in real life. Also, talk to people in roles you’re curious about — you’d be surprised how honest and helpful they can be.

Your interests changing is totally normal. Exploration is the process. Just stay curious, and don’t stress too much about having it all figured out yet — no one actually does 😊
