What can I do in a short amount of time to build my high school resume?

I’m currently a junior in highschool and I’m afraid I don’t have enough experience to get into a good pre-med program. Since college applications are in a couple of months, I wanted to ask what I can do in a short amount of time to help me stick out and build good experience for the medical field.

Thank you comment icon When it comes time to write your essay and present yourself, admissions officers will look for "your story." What are you passionate about? To give a personal example, we came here as refugees and an organization called HIAS enabled us to be sponsored. So that's something I am passionate about. How about you? Inna Tysoe

Hey Mira,
You still have time to make a real impact! Here's what you can quickly do to strengthen your high school resume for pre-med:

Volunteer in healthcare settings: Even a few hours a week at a hospital, clinic, or nursing home shows commitment to medicine.

Shadow a doctor: Reach out to local clinics or family doctors. Even a few days of shadowing looks impressive.

Take an online certification: Quick ones like CPR, First Aid, or basic medical terminology courses can add serious weight to your resume.

Join or lead a club: If your school has a pre-med, HOSA, Red Cross, or science club, get involved or run for a leadership spot.

Start a small project: Organize a health-related fundraiser, awareness campaign, or even a social media page about medical topics — shows initiative.

Get a part-time job related to healthcare: Working as a receptionist at a clinic, pharmacy tech, or volunteering at a blood drive shows real-world experience.

Write or blog about healthcare topics: If you like writing, start a blog or submit articles to your school newspaper — leadership + communication skills.

Since you’re going into the medical field I would suggest volunteering at a hospital. Many hospitals have summer programs so they may still have some spots! You can also get a job as a medical scribe, receptionist, cadet and etc (based on your areas requirements) to get more patient contact. Try to boost your application with volunteering as well! Tutor, become a soccer coach, mow lawns and etc.
