DENNIS’s Answer

Hi Azira:
Family law is a VERY emotional area of practice. Judge Judy was a Family Court Judge in New York City before her big break. Her son still practices in NYC.
Usually, lawyers go into a field they feel a connection with. Some do it to protect kids. Others do it because they see inequities in a family structure and want to correct it. Others do it because they see it as a path to earn a living. Some lawyers feel they were treated badly in their parents divorce and don't want to see another child treated that badly. So the motivation of a lawyer who becomes a family lawyer will depend on the circumstances.
I wanted to work with teachers and the law. However, once I got into law school I had to take a trial practice class. I have been doing civil trials for the last 44 years.
Azira, as a 17 year old student your job is to learn - anything and everything. As you learn and grow and experience new things something hits you and off you go! Let the journey be fun. The motivation will find you! Good luck.
