What courses were the biggest help to you as an elementary education major?

I am entering Millersville University in the fall. Just curious as to what others have thought about the courses offered for an education major - like what was your favorite? Or what course really surprised you?

Jerry’s Answer

First, I have never taught elementary education at college/university level nor have I taken any education courses.

While this may not qualify me in the least to offer you any advice whatsoever, I have, over the years, discussed with elementary education students one extracurricular exercise that many have found helpful.

I have advised students to visit their local elementary schools, meet with a person in administration, and ask if the student could meet with a teacher, or with a bit of luck, more than one.

If that indeed becomes possible, prepare specific questions the student wants answered.

And... with a great deal more luck, one may be invited to sit in a class or two and observe.

This may indeed be of greater value to the student than any particular course in education at the college/university level.

And then again, perhaps not.

And perhaps some good information to write a paper or two on.

But one does not know unless one tries.
