For anyone who is, or who has gotten into, university or community college with an undeclared major, how do you manage the impostor syndrome?

I sometimes feel like I don't deserve my admission because it was "an easy major" and not as impacted as nursing, etc. I feel embarrassed even to tell one of my friends, who didn't get into the school. When I mention my major, they start talking about how they should have chosen a less impacted major.

Hi Jade, please don't feel embarrassed . It is very normal to not be sure or passionate about a major. If going to a 4 yr. university, you won't have to declare a major for least 1-2 years. If going to a community college you can select "General Studies" as your major & explore- many students change their major a few times. Meet with a counselor to help decide on what you've come to like to help you. The liberal arts , humanities, are always good transferable courses to a 4 yr. Also, many 4 yr schools have a "design your-own-major" type of program designed to help you explore in the first year. Good luck !

Hi Jade,

Don't worry about feeling unsure. Many students aren't certain about their major when they start college, and some may think they know and end up changing their mind after taking a few courses. It's tough to decide your future career right out of high school, especially if you haven't taken any classes relevant to that field of study. Use your first year to explore. Meet with career counselors, join different organizations, take various courses, and talk to professors or TA's about their careers. Every major has value and can lead to an impactful career. Choose something you enjoy and feel excited about, as it will lead to a more fulfilling career. It's okay to take time to figure things out, and it's perfectly fine if your interests change along the way! Embrace the process and don't let others make you feel embarrassed or less than!
