How do I prepare for grad school while in undergrad?

What kinds of things should I be doing in college to prepare myself for graduate school?

I am a senior in high school currently. I am going to Grove City College next year for a science degree. I am planning to go to graduate school for entomology in the future. I do not know much about the process to get into grad school, but I do know some programs can be competitive. Should I join certain clubs in college or reach out to schools now?

Any advice would be helpful. Also, if you have any tips for pursuing higher education, they would be very appreciated. Thank you! :)

Hunter’s Answer

Some graduate schools ask for some work experience before you can join. It might be a good idea to look for an internship in the field you want to explore.

Thank you comment icon You're Welcome Jael, one more thing I wanted to add is that getting relevant work experience will not only help get you into a more competitive grad school, but will also help you once you get into grad school to get more out of it. When I got my MBA I had for years of work experience prior to going back and it was very helpful and applicable to be able to discuss the experience I had when we had discussions around different types of business strategy or working environment. Other students who are getting their MBA right out of school we're not able to participate in certain conversations because they had never actually experienced anything just food for thought. Becky’s Answer

Congratulations on setting a goal and actively pursuing it! When planning for graduate school, it's smart to begin with your end goal and work backward. Contact the graduate schools you're interested in or, at the very least, review the profiles of their incoming classes. This will help you understand the acceptance rates, common majors, GPA requirements, and GRE scores. Check how many students they accept from their own undergraduates versus other colleges. Reach out to their admissions departments for more detailed information.

For clubs and activities, focus on being involved and demonstrating that you are a well-rounded student. It's more effective to participate in a few activities where you can show real commitment and involvement over your four years, rather than listing many that only serve as resume fillers.

Good luck with your journey! Starting early is key and will greatly help you achieve your goals.

Becky recommends the following next steps:

Get involved
talk to graduate schools
Take practice GRE
