How do I find a job that I am truly passionate about?
I am interested in journalism , design, marketing, and photography. But I don't have a dream job. Or even a job that I could aim for. I want to be able to make a living, but going into college I want to be working toward something.

Hello Mary!
You don't need to worry about a dream job yet, focus on what you feel connects with you the most. You’re already on the right track with expressing your interests - journalism, design, marketing, and photography all these connect through creativity and communication.
Here are some suggestions from me:
-Start creating now – Blog, design, take photos, or market a small project. Build a portfolio, even if it's simple.
-Go deep in one skill – Pick one area to focus on first (writing, design tools, or digital marketing). It gives you an edge.
-Use college to explore – Take internships, join clubs, work on real projects. Learn by doing.
-Build your online presence – Show your work and your journey. Use LinkedIn or a portfolio site.
-Keep learning – Stay curious. Learn new tools, trends, and grow your skills constantly.
- Find what you don't like and eliminate those options
You don’t find passion by waiting—you build it by doing. Take small steps, and clarity will come.

What are you passionate about? Do you like fashion, movies, politics, or sports? If you want a career in journalism, you could be a generalist covering a wide range of topics or a specialist. As a specialist focus on one topic, it could be health, animals, etc. I love animals and wrote articles about pets and wildlife. I also wrote for Fairchild Publications' Home Furnishings Daily where I wrote about interior design.
If you love writing, you can combine that career with a topic you're passionate about.

Hi Mary,
Every adult I know has had some twists and turns in their career that they didn't expect! While it is important to keep in mind how you might apply the skills that you are gaining in college to a job, it is ok to not have the big picture sorted out yet. All of the things you mentioned could apply to a job one day - or you might discover something else on the way! I think it is ok to sign up for subjects that interest you and take it one step at a time. Having a degree is a good accomplishment and a goal in and of itself that can open doors. You can explore some and take on short-term jobs to see what experience you can gain along the way, even if it is not a perfect or "dream" job yet.

I've always found the concept of a dream job overwhelming and a bit fictional. Like you, I have many interests, and sometimes there isn't a good way to package them all together into a career. What has worked for me was getting into a line of work that plays to my strengths, doesn't drain me, has enjoyable challenges and growth opportunities, and allows me to have good life-work balance. Now I have the energy to pursue the things I love outside of a capitalistic/money-making paradigm. So another framework to view this from could be: try moving toward the lifestyle you envision yourself having ( what is your daily schedule like, are you in creative mode or problem-solving mode, are you solo/independent or working with a team, do you have set work hours or do you set your own schedule, etc) and let the particulars —like how your interests tie in—work themselves out. If you're a creative person, I think the most important thing is to prioritize whatever lifestyle and work allows you to be most that.

Hi Mary! I think it is important to pursue career opportunities that are interesting to you, but that is putting a lot of pressure on yourself for your job to also be your passion especially your first job out of college. For myself it has been helpful to think about which interests of mine align with a job and which ones can just be hobbies with no monetary component attached. Your career will evolve overtime and staying open minded to new opportunities and continuously learning will help you find the right situation for you. Finding a job that allows you to live the life you want to live can be equally important to finding a job your passionate about. Your season of life with change and what you need from your job with also change. Work life balance really matters and when you talk to people about their jobs, I would also encourage you to ask about their life outside of work because it's important to think about the life you want to live holistically.

If you're interested in journalism, design, marketing, and photography, keep learning more about these areas! It's okay to not have a "dream job" or even a specific job in mind right now. Your future job is out there, and the more you learn about the journalism, design, marketing, and photography industries, the more aware you'll become of opportunities (jobs) out there.

Hi Mary. College and even high school are perfect for exploring your interests and figuring out what you love and might want to do as a career. Besides classes, you can join activities that help you learn and use practical skills. For example, you can join clubs that work on the school's newspaper or literary magazines to build your skills. If you like music, politics, or lifestyle topics, consider starting a blog or social media page to share your photos and content. Once you have a collection of work, you can pitch ideas to local newspapers, especially if they lack coverage in certain areas like book or music reviews. Gaining experience in your areas of interest now will be very helpful when you're looking for jobs or internships. Good luck!
Take courses in areas you are interested in (journalism, photography, etc.) to learn the basics and develop skills.
Join clubs that allow you to develop and expand on skills in practical - and fun! -ways.

Hi Mary, this is an excellent question and one I think many young people are struggling with at the moment.
As the summer months have rolled around, I'd suggest that you start looking into your interests and find freelance work, so you can see which one interests you the most. If you find that journalism is for you, then go for it. There are always openings for individuals with journalism degrees and you can make a decent income as a journalist. On the other hand, your other interests can also give you a great opportunity to make a decent income if done right.
On the other hand, you can always try to combine all of your interests into one and promote yourself as being able to do all of these things.
Go ahead and start doing your research and find out exactly what each of these positions and the responsibilities linked to them entails and see which ones you are more willing to perform. I want to wish you the best of luck with finding the right career path for you. I know it can be difficult, but the key is to stay positive and just keep going.

Make your best effort to gain meaningful experiences in the things you're interested in. It's so hard to make a decision without being informed about what opportunities there are and what it's like to do do the job. The things you experiment with/try out in college may become something you're interested in/passionate about.
The best part is that you don't have to know exactly what you want to do right away. (Which sounds scary, but it's true.) Take the time to get some of your core classes completed in college, join campus groups and have new experiences. One of those things may spark a new interest or career path.
