How do I get a job as a bookkeeper?

So many sources say that all you need is a high school diploma to be able to work as a bookkeeper, howeve, anywhere I have looked most ask for 3-5 years of experience. I have taken (2 courses) accounting principals in financial and managerial accounting and plan to pursue a bachelors in accounting. I would love a hands on job while in school like bookkeeping. How can I get a bookkeeping job with no experience?

A lot of companies offer internships and most internships don't require previous work experience. However, they are looking for a decent GPA, previous team experiences (team projects, sports teams, etc), previous leadership experiences (organizations, community service, etc), a positive attitude, and a willingness to learn.

When I was looking for internships, I found it helpful looking at my college's career website, LinkedIn, and just googling internships with certain keywords like "summer", "accounting", "audit", "tax", etc. Good luck!

Thank you comment icon Agree with the suggestion to seek out internships - is there an employment center / recruiting office at your school who can help you out? When you're looking at job postings in the wild, look at the software proficiencies they are looking for and work on those skills as well (e.g., Quickbooks, Excel). If you have experience with such software, include that on your resume. Networking is a great way to go about a job search as well - ask people you know if they can introduce you to someone in the field, or in business in general. Brooks Butler
Thank you comment icon Thank you so much! I've started going to Clemson University and I finally got access to the joblink and am definitely looking into internships. I would love to learn how to build a good resume now since I don't have any work experience but have good school work ethic. Thank you for your suggestions and I'm definitely in the search for internships! Victoria

Several accounting companies provide internships. Typically, these opportunities are given to individuals with impressive GPAs. It's a good idea to contact local CPAs in your area, even if they don't provide bookkeeping services to their clientele. You might discover an exciting accounting position that appeals to you. Additionally, LinkedIn can be a valuable resource in your search for assistance.

You should at least study an intermediate accounting inorder to take the basics of bookkeeping, and it is better if you will also take the advanced accounting to be ableto work as a bookkeeper.

Find some self-employed bookkeepers on instagram who are hiring help! This would be a GREAT way to get your foot in the door, make some decent side money while in school, and be trained up by someone who is running their own profitable business.

You can also find local CPA firms and ask them about internship opportunities. Smaller, local firms will be able to give you some great experience, even in tax and/or audit which could be helpful as you pursue your degree (or even if you decide to stop pursuing your degree because your bookkeeping side hustle is so profitable!)

Begin by taking basic accounting courses, which are readily available through online courses, junior colleges, and evening classes at adult learning centers. Additionally, familiarize yourself with accounting software programs by exploring the numerous free tutorials online that demonstrate their functionality. Embark on earning your certificate or associate's degree, and as you gain experience, pursue a bachelor's degree. You can further your education by specializing in a field that truly captivates your interest, such as medical billing or forensic accounting.

Once you have obtained your certification or degree, start searching for entry-level positions in bookkeeping or accounts payable/receivable. With experience and ongoing education, you'll be well-equipped to advance in your career.

To excel in this field, it's essential to be comfortable with numbers and spreadsheets, possess strong attention to detail, and be highly organized. Most importantly, maintain unwavering integrity in all you do.

Kathy recommends the following next steps:

Search for bookkeeping certificates on line or in your area
