What jobs can I get that involve taking care of Marine Life?

I have dyscalculia (which means my mind really struggles processing maths and numbers), so I can’t be a marine biologist.

To be honest, my dream is just to train, clean the tanks of, feed, and take care of, marine life. Like working in a zoo but it’s ONLY for marine life, (like an aquarium). What would this job be called, how can I get qualified (I am from England, but wanna move to Australia), and if there anything I should know?!

Hi Olive,

You got exciting plans! Wonderful!

If you want to move to Australia, you need to familiarize yourself with the Australian immigration system to see which category would fit you and if you qualify for immigration.

The people who work in aquariums are called aquarists, which usually requires at least a bachelors degree, or aquarist zookeeper, which might be the more hands-on type of job you are looking for. You also find keeper or attendant as job titles.

You can search for jobs in Australia on LinkedIn, Indeed or Seek to find out what qualifications and experiences are required. You can also check out openings at aquariums and on the website of professional societies.

If you want to train in the UK, there are apprenticeship programs:

https://findapprenticeshiptraining.apprenticeships.education.gov.uk/courses/492

If you want to train in Australia, you need Certificate III. You find courses here:

Tefe:

Association of zoos and aquariums:

Another skill that is sought-after for aquarium jobs is a diving certification. Experience is very important too.

In summary, decide on an educational pathway and how/when you want to move to Australia. It might be best to get a travel and work visa first and look for casual work at an aquarium to get some experience and sort out visa, training and employment requirements while you are there and before you decide on a permanent move.

What you can do now is to volunteer at a zoo or aquarium or even a pet shop. If you are able to, start training for a diving certification. Check out apprenticeships.

I hope this helps! All the best to you!
