Kyla’s Answer

It really depends on the type of career you're aiming for, but there are a few things that generally help. Internships and externships look great on a resume because they show you're actively gaining experience before stepping into a full-time role. Volunteering, especially in areas related to your field of interest, is also a strong addition. It shows you're involved in your community and willing to take initiative. Employers often value leadership and a proactive mindset, and volunteering can really highlight those qualities.

Hi Isaiah,

I'm so glad you asked this question. Many people face the same challenge, so you're not alone. Here's my best advice: update your resume and use platforms like LinkedIn or Indeed to make it strong. These sites can also help you review your resume and suggest improvements.

Creating a cover letter is also a great idea. It gives employers a better understanding of you when you apply for jobs. If you find this process overwhelming, don't hesitate to ask a family member for help. They've likely gone through this before and can offer valuable guidance.

I hope this advice helps. I'm confident you'll create a strong resume that will aid you in finding a job. Best of luck!

Thomas’s Answer

Honestly, that's a little hard to answer without seeing your resume. However, I can say that you should shoot to be as concise as possible. If you are going for a job in computer science and you still have the grocery store you worked at when you were 13 on your resume, you may want to change. I'll also add that anything that you think might be relevant very well might be. If you were in an honors society in high school- include it on your resume. If you are a scout or gained valuable experience in another group or activity put it on.

The best thing to do is to look at example resumes online and copy what you think is important. Remember also to keep it short. If your resume goes on for pages and pages, the employer will probably throw it out. If it look nice and is 1-2 pages? They will give it a chance. Finally, don't put too many words on the page. People don't want to read a book when going through resumes. It isn't your life story- it's a snapshot.

Charlene’s Answer

Hi Isaiah,

It's important to be clear and focus on the key parts of your roles or education that show how you helped the organization succeed or what you learned that makes you a great fit for any new opportunity. Highlight your skills and education, and also what makes you unique and valuable to potential employers. Since you might be interested in different types of jobs, make sure to tailor your content to match the opportunity you are aiming for.

A strong resume should catch the recruiter's attention by sharing unique and true experiences. Focus on your skills and how they match the job you want. Make them eager to learn how you can benefit their team.

Tyler’s Answer

Great question Isaiah!

I was told from a college professor of mind in the beginning of building out our careers 3-5 solid opportunities for shorter lengths of time far outweighs 1 or 2 opportunities you had for a long period of time.

It's great for a few reasons:

-For you to figure out what you are passionate about experiencing more variety helps with exactly that.
-Future employers want to see depth of experience. Even early on in your career, having 3-5 opportunities where you worked an intern here, and a 3-4 month summer stint there, helps build out depth.

As for the resume itself, I would recommend inserting as many quantitative statements as possible. "I helped this many clients" or "I developed this many data visualizations for key stake holders to view".

Hope this helps!

-Tyler

Hello again, Isaiah !

Without details about your circumstances, age, field of work, year in school and exactly what you are asking for assistance with (do you have a resume already or just want things to put on a resume ?), no one can really tell you, Isaiah, how you can specifically "improve" your resume.

When working on a resume, it is vital to do this in person so someone can interview you in a student-centered meeting. A good resume is unique to the person and advice about it cannot be generalized. There are many resources online and in person that you should explore for this as you'll want your resume to include all of your experience and skills.

Your best bet, if you are in College, is to visit the Career Center on campus for one on one assistance. Bring the resume you already have and if you don't have one yet, ask if they will help you create one. You can also consider going to The Delaware Department of Labor because they offer career services.

If you are about to enroll in college or are already in college, you can apply for a Work Study job when you complete your Federal Student Financial Aid form. Work Study is a great opportunity to get experience and work in your Major Department on campus. Speak with the Financial Aid officer at the college you will or do attend and they can give you details about Work Study.

Explore if your field of study has any professional Certifications that you are qualified to take now. Having Certifications in your field is always good on a resume, but it will depend on what field of work you'll be going into.

There are numerous online resources that show how to write and improve a resume. There are also You Tube Videos on the subject that can prove to be very useful for you. Remember, everyone's resume is different, so this is best done in person, one on one with someone who can speak with you and bring out information you may not realize will be good for your resume.

I hope this helps in a general way and I wish you all the best !

Diane’s Answer

There are many examples of resumes online that target specific careers. I suggest reading as many as you can find and isolate statements you find compelling that describe commitment, experience, and opportunities then review your own resume to add the best of the best into your existing resume. I feel, when your resume might be light on experience, that either your career goal statement or a cover letter needs to express that resumes are only summaries of past successes and what you are looking for with "this" company is a future that gives you many more opportunities for new successes and advancements.

Diane recommends the following next steps:

Review resumes online that target the field you are interested in.
