Hi Khoree,
Indeed.com says the average rate for babysitters is $17 in Birmingham with a range between $12 and $25.
The rate would depend on age, experience, qualification and responsibilities. As a teenager or young adult without much experience, your pay would be on the lower side. You can ask more once you gained some experience and some good references.
Consider taking a babysitting class and getting certified. It will give you some credibility and give parents peace of mind that you know what you are doing.
I hope this helps! All the best to you!

Hi Khoree -
The pay for babysitting jobs in Birmingham, Alabama, can vary quite a bit, but here's a general idea based on recent data:
Average Hourly Rate: Most sources indicate the average hourly rate for a babysitter in Birmingham, AL, is around $15 to $18 per hour. Some sources show the average as high as $17 or $18, while others put it closer to $15.
Typical Range: You can expect hourly rates to generally fall between $12 and $25 per hour. More experienced sitters or those with specialized skills might charge on the higher end.
Your hourly rate can depend on several things:
- Experience: More experienced babysitters often command higher rates.
- Age: Younger, less experienced sitters might start at a lower rate.
- Qualifications: Certifications like First Aid or CPR can increase your rate.
- Number of Children: Babysitting multiple children usually means a higher hourly rate.
- Children's Ages: Caring for infants or toddlers might pay more than older, more self-sufficient children.
- Responsibilities: If you're expected to do light housework, meal prep, or help with homework, the rate might be higher.
- Special Needs: Caring for children with special needs often comes with a higher rate.
- Location within Birmingham Metro Area: Some nearby areas, like Mountain Brook, might have slightly higher average rates.
It's always a good idea to discuss your rates clearly with families beforehand, taking into account your experience and the specific needs of the job. Hope this helps!

Hello, Khoree !
I would like to give you some advice before you start venturing into Babysitting and hopefully guide you on the best path for you. You didn't mention your age, but I will advise assuming that you are still in high school.
If you are seeking babysitting jobs, there really isn't an across the board accurate rate of pay because you would be working privately for different families that pay different rates. To start out, ask your parents to spread the word that you are available to babysit. Let your friends and relative know that you are available, too. If you get a call to babysit, the family will let you know what they're offering to pay. So, if you really love children and want to start babysitting, start spreading the word and be open to whatever the families can pay you. Each family has their own financial ability as to the amount they can afford to pay.
The pay can be higher in major cities as compared to small towns. Birmingham is a small city, so as you obtain families you will see what the acceptable rate is in your town. Your pay will add up based on how many families you end up babysitting for.
I started babysitting when I was 12 and through the age of 16. I had so many families and made a lot of money. Once you babysit for one family, they tell their friends and their friends tell others and that's the best way to get the work. By word of mouth. That was very, very long ago and no one paid any more than the rumored rate which was not set in stone, but a sort of rate that was usual and commensurate with the economy at that time.
Make sure that you enjoy children 100% and you can even branch out to do house cleaning and also run errands for people and other various helpful jobs. You can also consider being a Mother's Helper, too. You can go to the website Care to seek babysitting jobs in Birmingham. They will not tell you the rate of pay, rather a range of dollar amount but it's not what you'd get paid - the family will have to tell you.
There may be some families for which you may need transportation, so ask your parents (if you do not have a drivers license yet) if they would drive you to and from your babysitting jobs.
So, even though no one can tell you how much you'd get paid before you even begin, you can make a lot of money by spreading the word that you are available, expanding your jobs by doing Mother's Helper or Odd Jobs and being open minded to what people offer to pay you.
I hope this helps to start you on your way and I wish you all the best !
