Hi Olivia! If you're in school, teaming up with your counselor can be a great step to find internships and get ready for interviews. Schools often have connections with local employers, which can be really helpful if you need credits for your diploma or degree. Plus, for high school internships, your school might even offer transportation.

But don't feel limited to just those employers. Many companies post internship opportunities on their websites or on job sites like Indeed and LinkedIn. Be sure to read the job descriptions carefully to learn about the work you'll do, the schedule, and any pay. Some employers may only accept students from specific schools or those pursuing certain degrees, so keep an eye out for that.

Update your resume or profile on Indeed and LinkedIn to show you're looking for an internship in mass communication. Be clear and specific about the kind of work you're interested in and be ready to talk about why you love journalism, public speaking, or mass communication.

If you're planning to intern while in school, your school counselor can offer valuable advice and support.

Good luck with your search!

Hi Olivia,

Are you in high-school or in college? Since you are in Alabama and interested in mass communication and journalism, I would recommend that you check out the websites of University of Alabama and University of South Alabama. Both have undergraduate programs in journalism and communication. Get in contact with the Admissions Office and/or the department and get some information and maybe arrange for a visit.

Do some research what kind of careers you could aim for that involve mass communication and/or journalism. Depending on your interests, other education paths might be appropriate too. For example, if you are passionate about climate change, a degree in climate science or chemistry would be a great foundation. If you want to go into politics, political science would be a good foundation.

Some career options for people in the communications/journalism field:
Advertising, Anchor, Announcer, Broadcast Engineer, Camera Operator, Communication Specialist, Copywriter, Digital Editor, Direct Marketing, Editor, Fundraiser, Journalist, Lighting Technician, Media Relations, Producer, Public Relations Specialist, Reporter, Social Media Strategist, Sound Technician, Sportscaster, Videographer, Weather Forecaster.

Most internships would be for college students, but I found a few that are for high-school students:

https://alabamapress.org/high-school-student-internship-application/

https://www.impressiveteens.com/top-10-journalism-internships-for-high-school-students/

There are also writing workshops and retreats for high-school students: https://calendar.uab.edu/event/ada-long-creative-writing-workshop-for-high-school-students

Other things you can do:

If you have a school newspaper and/or a photography/film club, get involved.

Join a Toastmasters club to hone your communication/speaking skills.

If you have any causes that you are passionate about, e.g. political, environmental or social, you can get involved in organizations and speak about those causes to educate, fundraise and generate support.

Find out about local newspapers and inquire about opportunities to intern or shadow.

You can start writing newspaper style by yourself. Attend local events, write a report and pitch it to a local newspaper or start a blog site/Facebook page to publish your reports.

I hope this helps! All the best to you!

Hello, Olivia !

Communications is such an awesome, active and exciting and diverse career and I would be happy to give you some advice. I will assume that you have your Bachelors Degree in Communications because you did not indicate your education, skills or experience for anyone to advise what job you specifically should apply for.

A huge part of the Communications Program in college is learning how to start your career. This comes about by making very strong connections in your department and spending a lot of time around the department, staff, students and professors. By doing this, you will gain much clarity about the career as well as hear about possible opportunities for work. I get the drift that the trend these days is to look for an Internship after graduating, but that is not what we did back decades ago when I went to college. We just applied for a career job - employment. Did you not do any projects or internships while in college ?

If you are not sure what this career entails or how to go about finding employment, you may want to consider possibly going for your Masters Degree and doing advanced courses and a thesis. You should care about which niche you work in for communications because you will have to love the work that you do. It can be a competitive field which requires a lot of networking and developing contacts, but if you know the niches you love, that will make it easier to know which jobs to apply to.

I am not sure that companies hire a Public Speaker, per se, rather a staff at a company is usually assigned to give presentations, trainings or speak to the public. I am not sure why you wouldn't know where to apply for journalism jobs because the name more or less states the places to apply to. Your first step is to return to your college and visit the Career Center so that they can assess your needs and guide you to the best opportunity.

You are in Mobile, Alabama according to your profile, so that means you will need to make a list of all the venues you can possibly be employed at. Television Stations where you live that you can apply to are WPMI-TV, WKRG-TV , WALA-TV , WMPV-TV, WDPM-TV, and WJTC. Go to their websites' Employment link and apply for any openings that you qualify for and inquire about internships if that's what you really want. For jobs in Film, there is Red Sky Studios in Birmingham. You should also explore the Alabama Film Office at the Alabama Department of Commerce in Montgomery. Go to their website to see about employment opportunities. Do the same for the City of Mobile Film Office.

For print journalism employment, explore Lagniappe, The Press-Register, The Mobile Gazette, The Mobile Commercial Register, The Mobile Times, The Mobile News-Item, and The Mobile Press. Explore their websites' Employment links. You can also register at employment websites such a Linked In and Indeed and set notifications for the types of jobs or internships you want. No one can tell you what job to apply for. It will be up to you and what positions you're qualified for. Also look into the Alabama Department of Labor. I like their tag line - "More than jobs, we advance careers".

I hope that this is helpful and I wish you all the best !

Make sure your resume clearly shows how your interests and experience match the internship's responsibilities and requirements. Internships are competitive, and companies want to see a clear link to their work or mission. If you lack job experience, highlight relevant school projects or interests in your resume. Show that you have researched the company and are passionate about the field.
