Claxton’s Answer

Hi there, Ezekiel. As the son of a mechanic myself, I grew up around cars, and I know that how much you'd work as a mechanic will depend upon where you work.

The service departments at many car dealerships are open six days a week. That would likely mean you'd work 40 hours a week plus overtime as required. Privately owned shops, those not owned by a dealership, tend to have more variable days of operation, from five to seven days a week. Again, you could expect to work at least 40 hours a week in that environment plus overtime as required.

If you were to run your own garage, you would be in line to work a lot more, especially in the first few years as you build your business. I can remember my dad working seven days a week, often deep into the night, as he established his business. That large initial investment in time, though, helped him build his business so that he worked five to six days a week, and not always so late.

It's good that you've gotten on the track now to learning about being an auto mechanic. It's a skill that is always in demand because people need their cars for so many things. If you continue to pursue that line of work, whether you work for yourself or someone else, I hope you have success with it.

Hassan’s Answer

The only way to really get answers to your question is to call local shops and ask them.

For entry level jobs, I'd assume it's ~40hrs a week if there's enough business. Busy shops may require more hours while others may just offer part time. Shop leads or Sr Tech maybe on salary and have to work 60hrs a week but it'll all depend on the shop.

Hi Ezekiel,

In Arizona, starting your journey to become a car mechanic is exciting. Begin by joining an automotive technology program or apprenticeship to get hands-on experience. You'll start with tasks like oil changes, tire service, and brake work, gradually building your skills. Working towards ASE certification is a great step since many employers look for that. With your training, certification, and practical experience, you'll soon be ready for advanced repairs and diagnostics. This will lead you to a fulfilling career as a certified automotive technician.

Wishing you all the best!
