Yes, this is a great program to join! I'm a licensed attorney in California and went to law school in San Francisco- many of my classmates participated in model UN, speech & debate, mock trial, and similar types of programs in high school and even college. Model UN is especially helpful if you're interested in practicing or learning about international law, but generally very useful for building skills in any legal profession (public speaking, debate, writing, research, collaboration, and influencing). Maintaining a high gpa is certainly important for getting into college and law school, but so is participating in extra curriculars like this. Model UN will also give you the opportunity to meet a lot of like-minded students and people who can be a good support network for you as you navigate the next steps in life and your future career.

I a son who is a sophomore in college and a daughter who is a junior and this is the advice I shared with them... Do the things you are genuinely interested in. High school is not just a means to an end (getting into a good college) but an end in an of itself. Pursuing things that interest you (whether that's Model UN, an after school job, a sport, a volunteer program, etc.) and investing your time in them makes sense because that's a good way to approach LIFE not just the college application process.
That's probably easier to say than to do. And we had the luxury of living in a city/kids attending a school that isn't a pressure cooker where every decision felt like it ultimately tied back to "Will it help me get into college?" But I believe so strongly that my kids are better people, happier people and ultimately, better college students/candidates because they are focusing on being in the moment.

Hi Paolo,
Model United Nations is a great extracurricular activity if you want to go to law school. You'll learn about politics, international relations and diplomacy. You'll develop skills in research, public speaking, debate, critical thinking, teamwork and leadership. All skills that are fundamental for law professionals no matter what area of law or what career path you might choose.
I hope this helps! All the best to you!

Absolutely! You'll learn about politics and international relations, pick up new skills, and get to discuss ideas with people who have different views. This experience can also boost your college applications. Plus, it's a fantastic way to expand your network. You might meet people who share your interests and make lasting friendships. I know someone who joined a similar program in the 1990s and still keeps in touch with friends he made there.
