Hi Riley,

That is a great question. It all depends on what type of librarian you would like to be. There are school librarians, public librarians, children's librarians, university librarians, special librarians, and several more. Special librarians can work in law firms, the government, hospitals, all sorts of places. There is also a path to go into archiving, museums, and much more. I recommend checking out the ALA organization. There are several different career paths within librarianship. You may spend your day in a high school library, working with students and teachers. Or you may be a remote librarian, working on research. Or you could work on a university campus in the engineering library. When you go to library school, you can focus on different areas so that you are knowledgeable about the resources in your field and best practices. You can also always change pathways anytime in your career! One of my favorite parts about being a librarian is that technology is always changing and part of our job, no matter what type of librarian we are, is to stay on top of the changes.
I hope that helps!

Hello, Riley !

Many students inquire about various careers and what a "typical" day is like for that work. There's no typical day. If you become familiar with the work, you'll know the job duties and can decide if that's the work you'd want to do.

One of the best careers to Shadow is a Librarian. Pick a day to spend at the Library and observe. Your Atlantic Public Library has a lot going on. They offer public access to an online catalog, digital resources, research tools, and educational video tutorials, Friends of the Library group, volunteer opportunities, and a Board of Trustees. When libraries have rich programs, there's never a typical day. My local library has enormous programs, especially for children and some hold classes in various subjects or skills. As a Librarian, you may never know a typical day but will have definite job duties as advisor Niels de Jongh has mentioned.

So if you want to know about this career, Shadow at the Library and also inquire about doing volunteer work at the library both at school and your public library so that you can learn first hand how it is and how it varies from day to day depending on what may be happening and the different people who use the library on any given day.

The work that Librarians do doesn't exactly "change", rather can be enhanced and additions can happen through new programs and activities at the Library. If you love reading, writing, books, learning, a career as a Librarian would be ideal for you !

I hope this helps and I wish you all the best !

Niels’s Answer

I may not be a librarian, but I know a bit about the job. Librarians usually handle managing book collections and use special software for this. To stand out from places like Amazon, consider hosting fun events like book signings, book clubs, or reading sessions. You could also offer personalized review cards to make the library experience special. Since you can't have every book on your shelves, make sure you can order and deliver books quickly. You might also want to think about offering e-books for your library members. In today's digital world, focus on making customers feel welcome and help them with book recommendations.

Ping’s Answer

Dear Riley,
A typical day for a librarian varies depending on the type and size of the library, but it usually involves a mix of public-facing and behind-the-scenes responsibilities. Public-facing duties often include assisting patrons at the information desk, helping them locate books and resources, and answering reference questions. Behind the scenes, librarians may focus on collection management, developing and running programs, learning new technologies, and handling administrative tasks.

Hope it helps.
