Hi Lilly,

It's a bit early for you to start with any formal education in marine biology. For now, you can enjoy your biology classes in school. Use the library and YouTube to learn about animals in the ocean. You can just follow your own interests. I see you are interested in sea turtles? Look for information about different types of sea turtles. Research where they live, what they need to flourish and what the threats to their environments are.

Check out Science Fairs in your area. Does your school participate? If not find out the categories and deadlines for Science Fair and develop a project for next year.

If your parents are able to take you on a trip, Greater Cleveland Aquarium, Columbus Zoo and Aquarium and Pittsburg Zoo and Aquarium are all worth a visit. Check out their websites for educational resources and camps, especially the online resources. The Cleveland Aquarium also hosts career days.

Some camps and programs you might be interested in:

When you are a bit older, you can look for internships in marine biology:

You can also look for aquarium shops in your town, and when you are a bit older try to find a job there. You can learn about keeping sea animals and how to maintain their habitats and clean and repair things.

I hope this helps! All the best to you!

It's fantastic that you're passionate about the ocean at 12! Starting young gives you a great advantage. Dive into fun ways to learn: read books like "The Magic School Bus on the Ocean Floor" or "National Geographic Kids: Ocean Animals." Watch marine life documentaries on Netflix or YouTube. Visit aquariums or beaches to see ocean creatures up close, and keep a journal of your observations. Join a school science club or explore online programs from the Ocean Conservancy for kids. Try simple experiments at home, like creating a mini ecosystem in a jar or learning about tides. If possible, take swimming lessons and aim for good grades in science and math. As you grow older, consider volunteering at marine centers. Stay excited this enthusiasm will make learning even more enjoyable!
